notes
Lenny McDaniel has come full circle. After 12 years working in Los Angeles with the likes of Stephen Stills, Dwight Yoakam, Dr. John, and John Mayall, he has established himself as one of the most compelling singer/song writers and instrumentalists in his native New Orleans, the city famous for rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel. Tired Angels, his third solo CD, is an exuberant, finely crafted collection of songs, featuring McDaniel's vocals, guitar and piano work with bassist Doug Therrien and drummers Allyn Robinson and Mike Barras. Therrien and Robinson have worked together for several years backing blues guitarist Tab Benoit, and lock into a mean groove effortlessly. Robinson is an old, pre-L.A. cohort of McDaniel's, having worked with some of his early New Orleans bands as well as such notables as Luther Kent, and he was a member of Wayne Cochran's C.C. Riders when Jaco Pastorious held the bass chair.
Barras frequently backs McDaniel as part of his current live band, and has worked with the contemporary blues group Stavin' Chain and the rock band Beaten Path.
Backup vocals were contributed by Beth McKee, formerly of Evangeline, and Janet Lynn, one of New Orleans' finest blue-eyed soul singers, currently breaking out of the trenches of Bourbon Street.
The music harks back to a time when the line between rock and r&b was a thin one, and you didn't worry about formulas-you played and sang what you felt. McDaniel reaches back to his roots to address the love and heartache, the violence and paranoia of contemporary life with both irony and compassion. From the churchy choruses of "Tired Angels" and "Wheel of Love," to the edgy, guitar-driven blues of "G.L.P. Blues," from the classic New Orleans piano stylings of "Lord Knows I Try," to the infectious, Hendrix-meets-James Brown groove of "Can't Get Through," Lenny McDaniel's Tired Angels presents modern, New Orleans-bred soul music at its best.

Happy Angels !!!
author: LaurentThis is to my ears Lenny's less bluesy album. It has more of a singer/songwriter touch and I urge Van Morrison fan to get it (as well as all of his solo albums). Once again this is pure joy. Lenny is a wonderful lyricist and songwriter. Funnily enough my favourite song was not written by Lenny but he made it his own and I could not picture anyone else singing it : "Rosa", one of the greatest ballads ever written. This song only is worth buyis worth buying the album. The rest comes as a bonus :-) A bonus of the highest quality. As the late Armand Zildjian used to say this album is "beautiful baby, beautiful".
Best CD I've bought in a long time
author: MaryThis is the first CD I've bought from Lenny McDaniel - as a matter of fact, I had never even heard of him until the day before I bought it. I hear TIRED ANGELS on the radio and knew I'd have to find this CD somewhere. McDaniel's voice and arrangements are mesmerizing and his songs of faith come with no apologies or attempts at political correctness. I'll definitely be back for more of his CD's.
