notes
Wakeful Dreamer is a collection of 12 songs that explore the many sides of dreaming, from the concious vision of Lord Tennyson's Wakeful Dreamer to the wistful longing of Duke Ellington's Daydream.
The album opens with Nancy's own Dream of the Magi and then proceeds to weave together a tapestry of songs intended to invoke reflection and invite the listener to muse.
"My original intent was to create music that would promote thoughtful reflection and encourage the listener to look within to one's own inner dreams, imaginings and musings."
"I want this music to provide time out from the daily pressures that keep us focused on the mundane world, and allow an opportunity to reconnect with one's inner world."
"The musicians who gathered around me were all excellent jazz players, and so the songs I brought to the album became wrapped in gentle and varied movements and moods which clothed my own voice in a sea of changing color and form."
On this album, songs by the swedish composer Thomas Wiehe are translated and adapted by Nancy Lehwalder, then mixed with unique melodies by Duke Ellington and infused with creative arrangements by bassist Clas Engwall.
To this, Nancy adds her own blues, a setting of the evocative poem "Wakeful Dreamer" by Alfred Lord Tennyson, and her own gentle yet penetrating voice, creating an atmosphere of rest within movement.

A wonderful collection of beautifully compelling picturesque songs and melodies.
author: Gary BelgardeI could blather on and on about the gloriousness of her voice, the top notch jazz performances, and the wondrous iconic imagery of her songs, which are all true. Every one these aside, what I have to say is this, in general I am not a man who likes or is even moved by music, however this cd made me weep from its genuine gentle beauty. And I am eternally grateful to Nancy Lehwalder and all those who have brought to me such joy.
Wakefuldreamer is about awakening from the dream of life.....
author: D. Bould, East West BookshopActually, this album is not so much about dreaming as most people understand the term. It is much more about waking up from our illusory dream of the world as a solid and limiting reality, and becoming aware of the radiant spiritual reality that stands behind, infuses and transcends everything we know.
Review by Victory Music, Seattle
author: Victory Music ReviewNancy Lehwalder has a gentle, quiet voice, almost fragile, yet strong. Jewel-like. She sings clearly and softly about a variety of dream-like states, beginning with a song she wrote," Dream of the Magi," which has a marvelously memorable melody. I've enjoyed having it swirling in my head the past few days. On top of that, the words and music are a perfect fit. A gentle album designed for personal reflection on the part of the listener, it also swings.
Velvety voice fits right in with great jazz.
author: Bill Katzenstein, Iconic Photo, Washington DcThis morning heard Wakeful Dreamer played at the Sirius Cafe in Washington DC, where they feature a different disc each day. Compared to the typical fare, I was highly impressed by Lehwalder's spirited singing, at once soft, lively and clear, which combined with great jazz make this CD compelling.
