For Tori Amos & Charlotte Martin fans. The intensity and intimacy is powerful on this confessional debut album. It is a collection of reflective songs ranging from thrusting piano-driven melodies to delicately stripped-down piano and voice. Haunting.

notes

ARTIST DESCRIPTION

Jennifer Lee offers up a voice for the new generation of the Tori Amos and Fiona Apple formula--"the girl and her piano," with her own unique sound. Her debut album, "beyond the frame," is a body of work comprised of thrusting piano-driven melodies and darkened, thought provoking lyrics riddled with harsh reality. This singer-songwriter strikes a nerve with her personal life experiences. With songs covering religion and rejection, to rape and suicide, "beyond the frame" is the key to entering this songstress' ravaged heart and spiraling mind.

Lee's voice delivers solid emotion--it's like the month of March, it comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. "Beyond the frame is a true story of a girl with a sensitive heart in a not so sensitive world.

ALBUM DESCRIPTION

"Beyond The Frame" is an emotional journey through the soul of a sensitive, intelligent, societal bruised girl. It is a delicate balance of percussive, piano-driven songs and intimate, raw piano and voice. It is lyrically, emotionally, and musically intense, evolving from dark and orchestral, to moments with hints of light and humor. Just when you think you've reached the darkest moment, a faint beacon of light at the end of the tunnel takes you to a more peaceful place. "Beyond The Frame" reaches in and makes you care about this artist. If you are at all in tune with yourself, you will enjoy this ride.

  • Unexpected

I have been on the hunt for some new music for a while now, and when I typed in "Charlotte Martin", whose music I adore, on cdbaby's "sounds like" search function, little did I know I would stumble onto such an amazing treasure in Jennifer Lee's music. Yes, I completely agree: she sounds like Tori in her early days (and I love early Tori). But I "get" her lyrics more than I get Tori's, and that accessibility translates into my emotionally connecting more with her music. There's no doubt how she feels when she sings each word--you can feel her anger/despair/etc. in your own heart, and the melodies and lyrics are perfectly entwined. I must say that I love all the songs on this cd, but I particularly love "Liquid Ice"--the middle and the ending... with "Would you ask why like me?" and the piano and string arrangement swirling around her voice... It's incredible. I absolutely blast it in my car. I'm always a sucker for a "tortured" girl who plays the piano, and this cd did not disappoint! Buy it!

  • Beautiful album.
    author: Amalthea

Comparisons to Tori Amos's early work are inevitable, particularly with the somewhat derivative booklet art, but Jennifer Lee's Beyond the Frame is a lovely album in its own right. I look forward to seeing what she might do when she comes into her own voice and style, but until then this is definitely worth a purchase. Gorgeous vocals and piano.

  • Fantastic album
    author: Daniel

Yes, I do love this one. She has such a sweet smooth voice :) mh, and the piano is great, yeah. Saw her videos in the net live playing solo. Definitley someone to look forward to in the future

  • a masterpiece

    a masterpiece! beautiful. Wow!!

  • like a POWEFUL drug...
    author: Marco Lopes (marcolopes@netc.pt)

I call her a BIG girl with a toy piano... She has adopted a very "dark" and amazing technique, that, at first glance can sound repetitive, but it’s not. The positive aspect of this type of work is the continuity of every track, transforming this LP into a strong musical score. "Beyond the Frame" is like a POWEFUL drug that can make you change your mood in a second (for better or for worst). Track 2 it’s called "morphine", and it would make a quite honest LP title. So, beware: this one can make you fly, can make you fall, or even crawl. . . but will NOT let you go indifferent. A FABULOUS work.

  • Beautiful and Real

This cd is absolutely worth your while. Impressive piano work with the type of emotional vocals that make music what it should be... expression. Gorgeous.

  • Play it all day and all night long
    author: Rick

Jennifer Lee burns in twelve tracks like a force of nature. Her volcanic lyrics destroy any preconceived notion of what alt piano folk ought to be. Her pyroclastic virtuosity as a pianist matches the unremitting heat she brings to her lyrics. "Beyond the Frame" circumscribes new ground where none existed before. I play it all day alongside other alt piano music as I work. It helps me keep the faith as I continue into the night.

  • !!!!!!
    author: Whitney

This CD is just sheer perfection for fans of confessional piano driven songs- of course, Tori comparisons are inevitable (does any female piano playing singer/songwriter escape that?) but please check out this CD solely for Jennifer Lee all by herself- her lyrics are fab and the piano playing is out of this world!

  • Incredible
    author: Nate Burger- Dayton, OH

i just bought this cd and i cannot take it out of my cd player, she is amazing! i go from home, to car, to the office listening to it. She definitely reminds me of early Tori Amos, but completely different. It's very good to know that someone is making amazing music amidst the pop generation. I hope she keeps putting music out, i know that I will keep listening. I hope Jennifer reads these reviews!

    author: blanketgirl

im fucking creaming my jeans right now listening to the samples! this girl is Tori's goddamn twin! i can't even believe what i am hearing.... okay im OBSESSED, ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with Tori so trust me i know... this is fucking genius! I'm buying this CD in a second! the only thing that bothers me is that she's almost toooo similar to Tori and we all know that Tori is irreplaceable, but still... this girl has talent if she can make someone listen to something and think of Tori! Serioulsy.. okay gonna go listen to more and buy the CD... highly recommended but don't anyone DARE but this stuff or listen to it before you've heard Tori cuz she is the ORIGINAL! *wink* peace.

  • Great first CD
    author: Karen Langefeld

She reminds me A LOT of Tori. She has great songwriting skills and plays the piano beautifully. I'm looking forward to her next CD.

  • Meet the new Tori Amos!
    author: rachel

Well, this is the closest thing I have heard to Tori Amos. I miss the old Tori, but this girl is fantastic. I am really impressed with the album. She's the real deal. She has the same fire, talent and intelligence without being so far out there. She is more attainable, but still complex. Completely moving!

  • In Love With This Album!!! I am addicted to it!!!
    author: Abbey -----UCBerkeleyGirl

I just want to say that this album is remarkable. Jennifer's voice is so beautiful and powerful. She sings with a full spectrum of emotion and she is a completely gifted pianist--WOW. There is so much crap out there these days, and really talented artists, unfortunately are hard to find, but they are out there. Jennifer Lee is one of the extreme talents out there. I listen to beyond the frame every day. It is my new anthem album.I am addicted to "Cock Pollution". The 2 minute clip on CD Baby didn't get to all of the orchestrated beauty of this song. It is Bjork-like in the production. The sound is lush and etheral, and the lyrics are totally scorned--you go girl! Awesome juxtapostioning. "Liquid Ice" hit home for me. It is a melancholy, empathetic view of rape. It is very personal, but gorgeous (one of those hard to swallow songs). "Just Love Me" is a favorite of mine. Very pretty. I like it because it it not interrupted by any other instruments. It is just her voice and piano--on the softer side. "Popular" is a riot. It makes me laugh. "Casualty" is a smart song. I am still trying to put all of the lyrical nuances together. "Whole" is the surprise track. It is a love song, but it twists near the end. I tell you, this album is rich. It has so much substance. Like I said before, I am addicted to this album!

  • Must Have CD!
    author: stan 2005 seattle, wa

3 words: FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC, FANTASTIC! This chick rocks. I totally love this album. I am a big fan of female singer songwriters that have an edge, and Jennifer definitely has edge. I loved it from beginning to end, and that is rare these days. Some of the songs are morbidly dark and to the point. There is a lot of symbolism, and tangents. Just when you think she is going to go one way, musically, she goes another. She has a great voice. She can sing. At times her voice is soft and almost broken, then she hits these Christina Aguilera notes. I also liked it because it is produced right. Some artists put so much SH** all over the tracks and it covers up the meaning of the songs. This album is not for sissy's. It is for people who like to feel, and think. It is very inciteful. She dug up stuff in me that I had never thought about. That is talent to me. BTW, her piano chops are stellar. Very cool.I hope she goes far. We need artists like her who can create deep, inciteful music. So, thank you Jennifer Lee.

  • BRILLIANT!!!--Beyond The Frame is a masterpiece.
    author: Lauren Avilogne--NY

Where do I start. I heard "morphine" on XM radio, and loved it--so I bought the album. She is very very talented. Her piano work is genius. A lot of people are comparing her to Tori Amos, and I definitely hear the influence, but she is where Tori was 10 years ago in a different sound, voice, so this is refreshing, and much needed for me. Each song is very different. It made me laugh and cry. "Popular" is a lot of fun, and I really related to the whole mean girl thing as a young adult. "Whole" is quite lovely. Probably one of my favorites. It is the sweetest song on the album. "Casualty" is a middle finger song too. It is probably the catchiest song in a dark kind of way. "Clean Up" and "Liquid Ice" are breathtakinly powerful (they are sad). I can go on, but all I can say is that I love this album. It is the best album I have bought in a long time. I have a new favorite song every week. I see this album remaining in my car changer for a long, long time.It is amazing.--Lauren Avilogne

  • A mixture of Ani DiFranco, Tori Amos, & Sarah McLachlan.
    author: Beth R

I am trying to categorize this CD. The songs are very different from one another. Some of them remind me of Ani DiFranco; some of them remind me of early Tori Amos; some of them remind me of Sarah McLachlan. I think this is one of those CDs I will listen to over and over and each time I will hear something new.

  • I really felt it!
    author: David C

I just got through listening to this CD. This girl makes you feel what she feels! There aren't many out there who can do that to me.

  • What a Breath of Fresh Air!
    author: Ryan M

What a breath of fresh air! This CD is not quite like anything I've ever heard. I kept getting the feeling she was telling her real story rather than putting on a performance. Is seems as if Ms. Lee is for real. The songs aren't about just one theme. Some of them are light and fun, and some of them are in your face heavy. If you are looking for something unique, take a listen.
