notes

'How to Disappear' is Lauri Kranz's 2000 debut album. The group of musicians that gathered in the studio had played with Kranz for several years. The tracks were recorded live to tape with very few overdubs. The music takes you to unexpected places. The slow, dreamy qualities hiding the louder sonic landscapes around the corner. There are many surprises here. This is not an album to scan through at the listening station of your local record store. Rather, it is something to put on late at night when you feel like you are the only person in the world not sleeping. This is music to keep you company.

"In 1994, singer/musician Lauri Kranz packed her possessions, hopes and dreams into a suitcase and fled New York for the gentler, sun drenched environs of Los Angeles. Kranz may have forgotten a few personal belongings, but the talented performer didn't leave behind her sensitive soul or her enchanting voice. Produced by keyboard player Jebin Bruni (Liz Phair, Fiona Apple), Kranz's debut, 'How To Disappear', is a haunting collection of songs by someone who knows how to convey her innermost sentiments. The heartbreaking opener 'Not Another Girl' will forcefully tug at heart strings as Kranz cries, "But you never really knew me at all/I'm just another name in that big book of yours." Other treasures, like 'Lucky One', are further testimony that 'Disappear' will do anything but." Bill Konig, CMJ New Music Report, April 10, 2000

  • warm, lovely, comforting soul music

Lauri Kranz has cornered the market on soft, beautiful melodies and warm lyrics. Like your favorite blankie or old t-shirt(you know the one...you've washed it hundreds of times...it feels and smells like home) never has there been a better record to cozy up with. In the tradition of Joni Mitchell and Marianne Faithfull, Lauri's songs lull you into calm with their thoughtful words and dripping, airy lyrical style. This record is a classic, one you can't do without. Don't miss it.

  • Original songwriting, superb production and touching vocals abound.

This record delivers with both original songwriting and solid musicianship. There is a strong but subtle male/female tension and a true dynamic in the play between the soft, sensitive lyrics/vocals and the harder-edged instrumentation. It serves the record well, and turns the record into more of a unified journey than just a collection of songs. This aspect makes the record very playable, again and again. The music is precise, the lyrics engaging and the production both original and satisfying. I recommend this CD.

If the instrumentals are just as important to you as the vocals, if your ear focuses just as much on the guitar tone and the craft of its voice as much as any human voice, there's a good chance this album will do it for you. Produced by Jebin Bruni (Aimee Mann, Fiona Apple), Lauri's music comes at you as a whole- one giant atmosphere, one giant, layered bite that holds together with an emotional elasticity. Melody is inseparable from harmony is in separable from rhythm is inseparable from instrumentation; one, cohesive chunk of aural nourishment.
