Gwen Laster
Violinist, Composer,Teaching Artist
Inspired by her mother's love for Blues, Jazz and the Motown sound, Gwen began her Classical training in the Public Schools of Detroit. She was motivated by the vision of her high school teacher Anderson White whose organic teaching approach was to simply point, shout and insist that she Stand Up and Take a Solo. This created the breeding ground for her interest in the Electric Violin, Improvisation, Composition and developing her skill as a Recording Artist. Shortly after earning her Bachelor's and Master's degree from the University of Michigan School of Music, she relocated to New York City. Her upbringing in Urban and Classical music was developed in NYC's eclectic environment where she played on Broadway and performed in Jazz clubs. Wanting an individual "voice" and "sound' as an improvising violinist, she recorded two CD's through her production company Muffymarie Music. "Sneak Preview" and "I Hear You Smiling" feature her original music and arrangements. Her work on recordings, performances and tours as an accompanying recording artist continued to expand with artists that include Alicia Keys' "Unplugged", "Fallin" "Every Little Bit Hurts", "If This World Were Mine", Anthony Braxton's live recordings at the Knitting Factory, Rhianna on "The Today Show" ,"The View" and the Barbados Music Awards, Hubert Laws' recording "Hubert Laws Plays Bach", Joss Stone's "Introducing Joss" and the music of Clint Eastwood at Carnegie Hall. Keeping her classical roots grounded she is a member of the Sphinx Symphony, has worked with the Lake George Opera, the Harlem Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Hudson Valley Philharmonic, Amici String Quartet, Heartstrings String Quartet, Open Heart Chamber Ensemble and has toured in Japan, Cuba, Haiti, Barbados, Anguilla,Canada and the U.S.
As a teaching artist, Gwen champions the concept of Diversifying the Classically Trained String Player. She teaches this concept through her very own Creative Strings Curriculum in Cold Spring, New York, at Poughkeepsie Day School and St.Ann's School in Brooklyn Heights, New York. Gwen is available for workshops in "Diversifying the Classically Trained String Player".
Her next recording of original music will be released in the Spring of 08'

AWESOME!!! BEAUTIFUL MUSIC!!
author: Jacquelyn LasterSIMPLY THE BEST!!We share same last name(no relations)This is absoultely good stuff. . . all of it!! Track #5, SOUL TUNE is a must as well as my favorite! The smoothness of the violin spilling over mellow but very groovin' backgound showcases just one of the many reasons why this cd is highly enjoyable. For more, try Laster's "I Hear You Smiling" cd also.
Anything new ?
author: Peter CupringNo, not really. A lot of things heard thousand times before. Just a pleasant CD for people travelling on 101 South.
Warm and inviting soulful violinist. Beautiful productions and arrangements!
author: Greg Spooner ( In Sync Music Studios)Great original songs, splendid musicianship, soulful violin playing. Clearly one of the best indie CD's this year!
From high school to the big apple, groovin all the way
author: William StephensonIN MY MOMMY'S ARMS is my favorite because it's a song about something warm. I find this CD to be a welcome relief from the booty call music flooding the airwaves. This is personal music, and it sounds good to my earhole.
