Thoughts on Get Lucky by Terry Teachout:

I LIKE SMART MUSIC, the kind that doesn't tell you everything it knows the first time you hear it. I like uncategorizable music that can't be squeezed into smug little pigeonholes. I like serious music that isn't afraid to be funny-and vice versa. If that's what you like, too, then you've come to the right band, and the right album. Or, to put it another way, you just got lucky.

From the Press Release:

As The Lascivious Biddies' unconventional arrangements of original compositions and standards-to-be blur the line between pop, jazz and cabaret styles, the group has been able to bring their distinctive sound to many different kinds of venues, including such venerable institutions as Joe's Pub (New York NY), The Bluebird Cafe (Nashville TN) and The Kennedy Center (Washington DC). In addition to their nightclub appearances, the girls continue to be featured on the roster of Carnegie Hall's Neighborhood Concert Series.

Over the years they have played together, The Lascivious Biddies have earned a reputation for having an energetic and tightly woven live show, full of laughter, vivacity and a dash of sentimentality. The ladies have captured a true taste of their unique flavor in The Lascivious Biddies' sophomore release, Get Lucky.

Get Lucky begins with a quartet of tunes that somehow, through their diversity, seem to define The Lascivious Biddies' sound and identity. The record opens with Betty, a hard swinging love song to New York City. Second is Ask, a cover of the Smiths 1987 classic reworked with much sweetness and four-part harmonies. Then comes Texas Girl, a western romp that bounces the listener into Salt, a slow, sexy, tongue-in-cheek tango treating the ancient and ubiquitous seasoning.

With this latest release Get Lucky, following their critically lauded debut Biddi-luxe! (2002), The Lascivious Biddies are armed and ready for another, bigger, better cycle of playing and singing across the country.

Referred by the podfather himself - Adam Curry podcast; What A Great Album! The songs could have easily have come over as crass, but The Biddies manage to make them sound extremely classy. Love it! When you a guys coming over to England?

  • Awesome.

This is the CD in which the talent of the Biddies shines through. Their ability to all different styles and all different tempos makes this CD unique in its variation. This variation does not destroy quality. No matter which style of music it is, the vocals rock with the support of the other instruments. Two great examples of this are, "Intellectual" and "Hell of a Boy" because they both feature the vocals but ones rock and the others slow respectively. This CD highlights the groups versitile talent and makes it that much better.

  • more great stuff

Adam Curry's podcast turned me on to the Biddies... and I'm really glad I found them. Truly a unique sound. Jazz... Funny Lyrics... Lots of energy.... Always puts a smile on my face! I love the Biddies!

  • It gets better each time I listen to it
    author: Oliver Weinitschke from Finland

The band has a lot of positive energy and it shows in the music. And it's amazing how well the music works in different situations: in the car, as background music or just listening to the music and lyrics. And it gets better the more you listen to it. It grows on you.

  • classy yet fun music

I'm new to the Biddies, thanks to Adam Curry's podcasts, and based on this fine CD, they're a great addition to my musical collection. In a world of pap pop, this is wonderful 'grown-up' music - catchy, sophisticated, fun, and so good on the ear.

  • Excellent CD

The Biddies get better and better. This latest CD captures their unique charm, sophistication and humor. A rare mix of talent, class and innovation.

  • Great stuff!!!

I can't add much to the other review (& haven't been able to hear 'em live unfortunately-- live on the wrong coast!). I think this album is even better than their debut & I liked that very much. If you like clever songwriting & arranging & accomplished playing with a swing spin, check 'em out. For me, with this album they move 'up' to area of personal faves like Dave's True Story, Deirdre Flint, Eddie from Ohio or Christine Lavin-- but the Biddies very distinct style too. Great album :).

  • Smart and sophisticated, yet funny and irreverent. A MASTERPIECE.
    author: Bill

The Lascivious Biddies are on the forefront of a small and still deliciously ahead-of-its-time genre defined (because humans so want to define everything) as "New Age Cabaret." Drawing on jazz and classical sensibilities but not afraid to acknowledge their diverse inspirations, the Biddies have created a masterpiece with "Get Lucky." With all the technical virtuosity, brilliant songwriting, nostalgia (and just a touch of.....um.....CAMP) of their previous efforts, the Biddies have upped the ante this time, adding more slow ballads (are they post-modern torch songs?) and country tunes. COUNTRY tunes. FABULOUS COUNTRY tunes. Highlights? OK, if you're holding a gun to my head, I'll say "Witchita" and "Famous" are my favorites, but only barely more so than "Truck" and "Texas Girl." And "Betty" and "Intellectual" kick serious ass. And "Ask" and "You Don't Own Me" are two of the best covers I've ever heard. Oh yeah, one more thing: the only thing better than hearing the Biddies' new recording is seeing them live. If you haven't been to a Biddies concert, your life is utterly incomplete. Get "Get Lucky" to gain an idea of what you're missing, then make plans to SEE the Lascivious Biddies.
