LARRY KIMPEL - LIVING OUT A FATHERS DREAM
Growing up on the tough streets of Chicago rarely gives children an opportunity to move from hopelessness to a chance to live out their dreams. But there are exceptions to just about every rule and this is the story of one kid who beat the odds. Veteran Studio Bassist, Vocalist, Songwriter and Musical Director for Frankie Beverly and Maze, Larry Kimpel has been thrilling audiences for over twenty years backing up some the biggest names in the music industry. Since his professional debut in 1977 he has played on over 200 CDs and worked with everyone from The Staple Singers, Grammy Award Winning R&B Diva Anita Baker all the way to Pop Rock acts like Steve Perry and Alanis Morrisette. His reputation is known world wide with fans from America to Japan.
Now Larry Kimpel debuts his considerable vocal, songwriting and performance talents on this his very first solo project. It's a Contemporary Praise and Worship CD entitled "Be Still and Know" on Larry's very own Indie Record Label GVR Records.
The CD was Co-produced by Monty Seward. Monty wrote the hit Gospel song "Say Amen" for Howard Hewitt and he also wrote the theme song for the hit Sitcom "The Parenthood" which stars Mr. Robert Townsend.
All of the intsruments on "Be Still and Know" were played by Larry Kimpel with the execption of Electric Piano on "One Step Ahead" which was played by Monty Seward.
The Background Vocals were performed by Monty Seward, Larry Kimpel, and Monty's Wife Kimia Seward. Kimia is best known as the former lead singer for the band "Hiroshima. Kimia continues to perform nationally and also teaches music to school age children.
And now a little historical background on just how Larry Kimpel became the man and the musician he is.
In 1940 at just 6 years of age, Larry’s Father, Allen David Kimpel left Tiller, Arkansas with his parents and endured the long hot train ride from the South to the eventual birthplace of one style of Northern Blues, Chicago Illinois.
As a young man Allen or “A.D.” for short, realized that he had a talent for singing and with that, he joined the local Church Choir. His voice was a deep rich tenor in the style of the legendary Nat King Cole and as a result, he was asked to lead many of the songs that the choir sang on Sunday Mornings. In the evenings, Larry’s dad would come home from his job at the Chicago Stock Yards and sit his infant son on his knee and sing soft melodic ballads to him. What A.D. didn’t know was that he was planting the seeds of music in young Larry and that those seeds would blossom into a world-class career in the years to come! Although he loved singing for the Church, the club scene was what Larry’s Father desired the most & so he left the altar and began singing on local Chicago nightclub stages instead. Having dreamed of super-stardom for as long as he could remember, A.D. put a Doo Wop vocal group together in the early 1950’s and began performing around town. But because the pressures of being in the spotlight proved too much for him, Larry’s Father slowly sank into a deep pit of alcoholism that followed him until his death in 1997 at the age of 77. A.D. never saw the bright lights of L.A. or the big time, but his spirit and his love for music lives on inside his Son and through Larry, his dream began to be fulfilled.
Larry’s leap from the Chicago music scene to the world stage came in 1989 in the form of a long distance phone call from Anita Baker’s Manager Sherwin Bash. Six months earlier Larry had the good fortune to meet Miss Baker at a concert that he was playing in Detroit with Anita’s former Musical Director, Pianist Bobby Lyle. Bobby introduced Larry to Anita after his set and the two hit it off! So when Anita began planning her 1990 Compositions World Concert Tour, she had only one name in mind for her Bass Player and that name was Larry Kimpel.
He left such a favorable impression on everyone involved with the tour that he was beckoned to make the move to L.A. which he quickly did at the urging of his lovely wife Kim Kimpel. Four years later he was asked back for Anita’s 1995 Rhythm of Love Tour. From that wonderful association Larry was then introduced to none other than Premier Keyboardist / Producer George Duke. Larry says, “My very first session in Los Angeles was with George, Paul Jackson Jr. and Ndugu Chancelor in 1991!” “As I sat in the studio holding my Upright Bass I said to myself, I made it; I’m living in L.A., I’m recording with the “Big Boys” and I’m living my Father’s Dream!” Larry’s Dad would echo those very words to Larry in their many conversations in the years prior to his passing. From that day forward Larry Kimpel has been one of the Top Bassists in L.A. But Larry Kimpel is not one to simply rest on his past accomplishments. “There are always new mountains to climb and new dreams to fulfill” Larry says. “I just want to keep on growing, creating and making my family proud!” It’s the very least I can do for all that they’ve done for me!”
