Review of Larry Garrett’s CD, My Old Neighborhood
Larry Garrett’s CD, My Old Neighborhood, is like a relaxing look through a family photo album. It starts off with two great songs about growing up in Kansas City, Missouri. These live recordings have the feel of the old “field recordings” of folk songs, but really highlight the songs themselves. Go get a second helping of home-cooked baked beans, sit down on your picnic blanket and take a stroll back in time. This CD is mmmm good.
-David Hakan, Songwriters Circle of Kansas City

We are all different. Yet, we all have a similar thread of sameness that runs through the fabric of who and what we are. Larry Garrett finds that thread and weaves it throughout his songs. While he is literally singing us his own story, he is establishing a connection that binds us all together as human beings who are just trying to live our lives. His CD, My Old Neighborhood, has a "you are there" feel to it. His material touches all of us, because in many ways it is us within the stories he sings.

My Old Neighborhood was recorded at “live” venues throughout Kansas City and surrounding communities. Acoustic guitar & harmonica.

Larry Garrett and his wife, Irene, reside in Independence, Mo., where he continuously performs at coffeehouses, bars, churchs, house concerts, family reunions, and songwriter venues. He also hosts and organizes songwriter and "open mic" events, along with being Artists Relations Director for KCCAFE Internet Radio.

  • Sounds good

This was pretty good. In the last decade or so, many things have been called folk music, but these songs really are folk music. Its good to hear an artist not supported by all the noise and clutter of a band. This guy is by himself and it's a nice journey he takes us on. Keep on writing your songs, Mr. Garrett. There's a nice human feel to all of your songs.

  • Nice Surprise

I didn't buy this CD here. Bought it from another site, but that site did not offer the opportunity to give a quick review. So, here goes I was pleasantly surprised at how closely this CD matches-up to what is suggested and promised in its advertising. Larry Garrett, even though I never heard of him before, has earned a high place in my collection of music. The songs on My Old Neighborhood are delightful, sad, and true-to-life. The CD also has a feel about it as if the singer is sitting there with you as he performs. These are powerful songs by someone who has something to say. Larry Garrett also has a good singing voice and these live recordings give us a good taste of what his performances are actually like, because we hear him mixing it up with the audience during his show. Along with the enjoyment of listening to the CD, I also got to know many of Larry Garrett's family, and friends. They are similar to the people in my own life. As people, we do have many connections to each other. I like the gentle guitar playing also, especially when accompanied by harmonica. You never know what you're going to get when you order off of the internet, but this cd was a nice surprise. Not bad at all.
