the Songwriter and Musician
Lara Herscovitch is “captivating” (Smother.net). “A remarkable performer” (WSHU Profiles in Folk), “one hell of a find” (New Haven Advocate). A unique and charismatic songwriter and performer, Lara’s music is an original and skillful blend of contemporary acoustic/folk blended with pop, and at various times Latin, jazz, and blues. “Delicious” (Indie-Music.com), smart, poetic and witty, Lara “masterfully” (Womenfolk.net) merges soulful melodies with “perfect wordcrafting” (New Haven Advocate) and “keen intelligence” (The Chronicle). She is engaging and “inspiring” (Manchester VT Journal), “fresh and invigorating” (Music Morsels), with a voice “clear and smooth like expensive liquor” (Northeast Performer).
"…Her voice and performance style had me captivated right away. She truly stands out in a crowd of rising folksingers" (Valley Folk, Elmira NY). Her songs cover a broad range of topics: love, family, wisdom, poverty…; “the more you listen, the more you will like what she does” (Green Man Review); it is “pure musical poetry” (The Courier). Her third CD, Juror Number 13, is“among the best folk releases of the year and possibly many years past.” (Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange), with her “great and refreshing sound” (Acoustic Café).
Where She’s Been
“Herscovitch is doing a fine job of building up a rabid fanbase” (smother.net) – she has played at notable venues including the Bitter End, CBGBs, Towne Crier, WFUV’s Under the Radar, The Sanctuary Concerts, Minstrel Coffeehouse, Acoustic Café, Connecticut Folk Festival, Music for a Change (U. Hartford), WUWF Radio Live (FL), Fredricksburg Songwriter Showcase (VA), Folk Music Society of Huntington and Garden Stage (NY), Center for Southern Folklore (TN), LilFest Folk Series (Chicago), Panzer House Concerts (MD) and Mocha Mayas (MA) (detailed list available). the Person
Lara was raised in New York and lives in Connecticut. She narrowly escaped law school, training instead as a macro social worker. She has worked in the US, Latin America and Asia, on behalf of disadvantaged individuals – focusing on education, community development, human services, and the environment. Echoes of this work, including personal and global themes and questions of social justice and equity resonate throughout her music.
