It took 15 years, and now the wait's over: Puerto Rico's finally put out a full-fledged timba album. That might be interesting, but it's more. The group, a bunch of younger musicians have put in time studying, not just the style-which sounds pretty damn Cuban-but how to make music out of it. There are timba breaks, with walls of percussion, and Cuban styled coros with shouting and all, and a drum kit and a bass that leaves huge holes of silence in its lines. Finally, who cares? It's dance music with good melodies, and good singing and walloping grooves.
