LAPTOP RANDY BIO ~ LAP SLIDE GUITAR
Laptop Randy was raised up by migrant sharecroppers in the Upper Mississippi Delta,U.S.A.It was during his formative years that he became known around the plantations for snapping his elastic underwear band to songs on the radio. One day the boy's red-headed step-daddy Wilmer Oatlee declared out loud to the child's mother,"Bumadine, that boy need a git-tar"!!

Well, the day came to pass that the rural route mail lady arrived with a large box from the Montgomery Ward mail order catalog folks.Inside was a dog ugly "Student Model A" acoustic guitar. The frail instrument was badly out of tune & sounded awful.Young Randy knew of an old man who lived down the road that played the guitar. Many evenings in the past he would sit in the woods & listen to the eerie, wailing guitar licks emanating from the old man's one room country shack. He announced to his Ma that he planned on paying the old man a visit."Boy looka heh,you keep way from ol Curtis Low,you heh" his Ma warned him."If'n I heh you been down they I'm a whup all y'alls ass"!

Late that night,Randy grabbed his new guitar & snuck down to the old man's shack.Mr.Low was out on the back porch, playing his guitar & Randy sat at his feet, totally entranced. He noticed that the old guy held the guitar flat, across his knee when he played. In his left hand he held an object that he slid up & down the strings, making the guitar 'speak'.He called the object his 'mojo'.

Young Randy was a quick study & Curtis taught the boy everything he knew about playing laptop guitar. On the last day before he passed to the other side,Ol'Curtis gave Randy a special 'mojo'(a black cat bone). To this day,Randy always plays his guitar with that 'mojo'.Mr.Low also christened him 'Laptop Randy'."I'm a call you 'Laptop' 'cause you show make that laptop git-tar whine so fine" he declared!

When he was nineteen years old,Laptop Randy traveled to Hawaii. It was on the island of Maui, deep in the jungles of the ancient Io Valley that Randy spent time with the mysterious Menehunes. The little folks showed him, among other things, the strange, beautiful open tunings that he employs on many of his recordings.

In the late 1990's Laptop Randy purchased a Roland VS-880 8-track digital studio workstation. As Randy tells it:"At first I was rather intimidated by the digital domain.I was also desperate to make some kind of recording right away.I decided that my first digital recording project would be a stripped down affair.I used my old dobro to record an instrumental CD called 'Down at the Cajun Cafe on the Bayou'.Every song is one take,no overdubs, recorded live in my living room.Considering that I knew very little about digital recording at the time,I think it came out pretty good.I am an independent recording artist & couldn't be more happy about it!"

Laptop Randy is currently based in the Tampa Bay area of Florida,U.S.A. His web address is:http://geocities.com/laptoprandy2000/slide.html

Laptop Randy is a treasure! His playing and his sound are unique and his original music is wonderful. His eclectic influences combine to produce a bluesy/Cajun/country feel. I really enjoy this CD.
