At just 17 years old, Justin Lanning is anything but typical. The Los Angeles born and raised teenager has been acting since he was six -appearing in several major motion pictures, television programs, theater and national commercials - and singing since he was nine.

"Right now my main focus is just getting my music out there and generating interest," Lanning said. "I'm ready to give the world my music."

With his graduation from High School merely months away, Lanning is already releasing his first full-length self-titled CD, a follow up to the EP he released back in 2001. "This record reflects me," he added, "and my personal experiences."

The 15-song disc is a collection of modern pop-rock tunes. Produced by Michael Raphael (Neve) the songs range from what it's like to fall in love for the first time (Everything) to the angst and pressures of growing up (Breakaway) to the rather timely tune about how scary the world has become (Sleeping With The Light On).

"It was very challenging playing all of the instruments, writing all of the songs, and basically working on it every day for three straight months. It really helped me get to the next level of being a musician."

Having already performed for, literally, thousands of fans in the U.S. and England, Lanning is a veteran, so to speak, when it comes to live performances. "It's definitely a rush," he said.

"Ultimately, I want to bring my show to someone like Prince's level where you can make the audience cry and laugh within a minute. It's a great vibe when you're just playing to a packed house and everybody's jamming."


Two years ago, Lanning toured the U.K. for the first time, playing sold out shows with his previous band, Kulprit. "I literally turned 16 on the plane ride home," he noted. The fast paced tour had the young Lanning performing 13 shows in a row.

"We just went over there and tore it up," he recalled. "I remember in Oxford, England at the Zodiac Club, all the bandmates were sick because of the really harsh temperatures, but there were like 1,500 people there. The audience moved around so much the stage actually shook. It was a real rush. The audience was vibing off what we were doing and we were vibing off the audience, and it was really a symbiotic relationship."

Not only has Lanning headlined shows throughout the Los Angeles area (Troubadour, Whisky a Go-Go, Roxy Theatre, Knitting Factory and Henry Fonda Theater), but with an aggressive type-A personality, he's even started "learning how to produce music" while continuing to work as a "concert promoter" for other rising talent.

"I work with a ton of bands and try to help them from the ground up," he said. "Hollywood's pay-to-play, so I try to not do that as much, and really help the bands in a launch pad situation."

"Music is from the soul," Lanning said, "and you can't rehearse that. I just have to adopt the principle: all faith, no fear!"
