notes

This is a collection of traditional and new music from Dave Landreth. He has been a banjo player for 25 years and has always wanted to record with some of the musicians he has been involved with. The musicians are Geoff Seitz, Chirps Smith, Garry Harrison, Steve Rosen, Fred Campeau, Jim Nelson, Mark Rennard, Tamara Lowenthal, Pat Egan and Catherine Cathers. This is a very textured collection and for the most part is pretty hard driving. Play the snippets here and see for yourself. I think you will like it.

A note from a fan:

Just got back to Racine and I had to write immediately to express my thoughts on your CD. WOW.... It blew me away. For my entire drive home, nearly 5 hours straight, I just let it recycle in the CD player every time the last tune finished so I could hear it again. I mean it man, your CD is AWESOME. And you my friend, are a total freak. I loved every track, I didn't think there was one that was so-so or mediocre in anyway. The production value is excellent and the whole things just kicks!!! - J. • Dave Landreth - cool old-time banjo
    author: Rob Krumm

If you're a fan of clawhammer banjo, then check out this CD by Dave Landreth & friends. Based in my home town of St. Louis, MO, Dave has put together one tasty CD of old-time tunes both old (Mississippi Sawyer, June Apple) and new tunes as well. With a technique that is solidly based in tradition, all of the tunes on this CD are worth repeated listenings. Dave has asembled an excellent group of musicians on this CD including Geoff Sietz, Chirps Smith, Mark Rennard and others. The CD is produced very nicely with all instruments very well balanced and the sound is excellent. A great road-trip CD, perfect for that trip through the Ozarks, the Shawnee Hills or the hills & mountains that are near and dear to your heart. This is a CD that I've recommended to other musicians and I've puchased at least 2 copies from CD Baby. Thanks Dave and keep those tunes coming.

  • One of the best old-time CDs of the past few years

I ordered Dave Landreth's CD Chairs on a hunch, based on his oddball website. Sounded like something I would like but I didn't really know what to expect. Since the CD arrived it has become one of my favorite old-time releases of recent years. Dave's skill on banjo is immediately evident, but there's much more than technique here -- it's a very musical collection of tunes, some new some old, but all memorable and toe tapping, and some surprisingly funky. Enough reading -- go order a copy! You'll be glad you did.

  • Wonderful old time folk music

I was also a fan of the Allen Street String Band, so it was a real joy to find Chairs. David's playing is so very traditional and heartfelt. This is a great CD, please make another. If you like old time string music, you will love this album. It doesn't get any better.

  • Funny and timeless
    author: Joel Stewart

On the basis of a couple of samples and the fact that Dave comes across as a very nice guy on his website I bought this CD, (ordered all the way from here in darkest Cornwall UK). I wasn't dissapointed. I especially like the original tunes which are all marked with a timeless feel, and a sense of humour. Sparked me to take up fretless banjo too!

  • Have a seat and listen to Chairs!

I'm an old-time player from Illinois when & where Dave played with The Allen String Street Band, and the Indian Creek Delta Boys, outside of Charleston. I've cherished a recording of the Allen Street String band on (an unlabeled) casette since 1988. So happy to have the latest works on disc! I especially love the Pappy Taylor songs with Garry Harrison. Brings back memories of summertime night jams in the country under the stars, out by the barn...
