"Guitar-spanking, open-tuning grooves as well as gentle folk-tinged pop. His lyrics range from insightful, image-driven stories to equally insightful humor." - Washington Times

notes

"Charm, stories, humour, insightful songs, sweet voice and dazzling guitar ability."
- BBC Radio

It's been fifteen years since David LaMotte has had a 'real job' or a real haircut. In that time he has recorded nine albums and performed over 1800 shows in 45 states and on four continents.

His music has been described by the Washington Times as "...guitar spanking open-tuning grooves as well as gentle folk-tinged pop." They continue, "His lyrics range from insightful image-driven stories to equally insightful humor."

Though this early live recording is a little rougher around the edges than later work, one gets a clear sense of the gentler, folkier side of LaMotte, and his sense of his humor and rapport with the audience. Taken from three shows recorded at the Grey Eagle in Black Mountain, NC in the summer of 1994, this album includes live versions of older songs and several previously unrecorded tunes, including We Are Each Other's Angels and Song for You.

Readers of arts & entertainment magazine Mountain Xpress voted Flying "Best Recent Local Release" in their 1995 Best of WNC issue.

When David decided to record a live album, the choice of where to record it was easy. The Grey Eagle, now located in Asheville, NC, was then in business in downtown Black Mountain, exactly one mile from David's house. It has long been his home town room, and the consistent support he has received there from fans and the owners make it an easy decision to record there. Each of the three shows that went into makeing the record was recorded with multi-track digital gear and mixed down later by producer John Alagia, whose credits include tons of work with the Dave Matthews Band, among many others.

LaMotte's song Dark and Deep, from Hard Earned Smile (the album just after this one), was selected for inclusion on Songs Inspired By Literature, Chapter One, a benefit CD to raise money for adult literacy campaigns. Other artists on that CD include Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann, Grace Slick and Bruce Springsteen. That CD is also available on CD Baby.

David has performed on the mainstage of the internationally known Kerrville Folk Festival, and he was featured as the headline act at the 2004 Auckland Folk Festival. While there he was awarded lifetime membership in the Guitar Association of New Zealand, only the third international performer to be given that honor in the history of the organization.

LaMotte is the founder and President of PEG (Proyecto para las Escuelas Guatemaltecas), a non-profit organization that funds projects to improve schools in Guatemala. For more info, check www.pegpartners.org.

David is also the author of a successful children's book based on his award winning children's song S.S. Bathtub. For more information on that, check out www.ssbathtub.com.

  • This CD means so much to me.

There are two songs in particular that seem like they were written just for my situation. Having just returned from an amazing church retreat, We Are Angels For Each Other and Your Song describe exactly what happened during these spirit filled days.
