"Charm, stories, humour, insightful songs, sweet voice and dazzling guitar ability."
- BBC Radio
It's been fifteen years since David LaMotte has had a 'real job' or a real haircut. In that time he has recorded nine albums and performed over 1800 shows in 45 states and on four continents.
His music has been described by the Washington Times as "...guitar spanking open-tuning grooves as well as gentle folk-tinged pop." They continue, "His lyrics range from insightful image-driven stories to equally insightful humor."
David's very first recording project, Barefoot, sold so much better than expected that he decided to go ahead and take the plunge and record a 'real record' on CD in 1992. At that time there still weren't many independent artists recording on CD, so it was a bold move and an exciting project. David hooked up with Van Atkins to engineer the project in his basement studio in Weaverville, NC. His sister Margaret and her husband Lee, who owned a graphic design company at the time, agreed to do the layout and design work, with Margaret taking the photos for the record.
In the Light contains his longest and shortest songs to date (the River and the Ant). Some great musicians who were playing around town in those days lent their musical talents, and the album was released to a fine response. Sales outran recording expenses within nine months, as has happened with each recording since, and David celebrated his first year as a full-time musician with the arrival of his first CD. Local entertainment mag Green Line called the record "refreshing like a mountain stream," and David's career was off and running.
LaMotte's song Dark and Deep, from Hard Earned Smile, was selected for inclusion on Songs Inspired By Literature, Chapter One, a benefit CD to raise money for adult literacy campaigns. Other artists on that CD include Suzanne Vega, Aimee Mann, Grace Slick and Bruce Springsteen. That CD is also available on CD Baby.
David has performed on the mainstage of the internationally known Kerrville Folk Festival, and he was featured as the headline act at the 2004 Auckland Folk Festival. While there he was awarded lifetime membership in the Guitar Association of New Zealand, only the third international performer to be given that honor in the history of the organization.
LaMotte is the founder and President of PEG (Proyecto para las Escuelas Guatemaltecas), a non-profit organization that funds projects to improve schools in Guatemala. For more info, check www.pegpartners.org.
David is also the author of a successful children's book based on his award winning children's song S.S. Bathtub. For more information on that, check out www.ssbathtub.com.
