notes
"David LaMotte is a thoughtful songwriter whose lyrics shine with clear images and well chosen words. Memorable lines abound..."
- Victory Review, Tacoma, WA
"Corners demonstrates why LaMotte has long been one of western North Carolina's most renowned songwriters.... LaMotte creates melodious folk pop imbued with a subtle, joyous spirit."
- Performing Songwriter, Denver, CO
"a folk-poet of elegant simplicity"
- Dirty Linen Magazine
"...a singularly mellifluous and rich voice, a keen sense of appropriate tune and a carefully honed talent on the six-string... But the really excellent deal, the reason his CDs keep winding up at the top of my stack, involves the man's lyrical finesse.... This is a darkly beautiful collection."
- Rapid River, Asheville, NC
It's been eleven years since David LaMotte has had a real job or a real haircut. In that time he has released seven albums and performed over fifteen hundred shows in forty-two states and seven countries, sharing stages along the way with artists like Arlo Guthrie, Shawn Mullins, Buddy Miles, Gillian Welch, John Gorka, Jez Lowe and David Wilcox. This record was released in June of 2000, and remains David's favorite of his own recordings.
Though he grew up in Sarasota, Florida, LaMotte's music clearly has its roots in the North Carolina mountains, which he came to love during annual family vacations in the small town of Montreat. After graduation from college with a degree in Psychology (and only one semester of music theory), he chose to make western NC his home and became part of the region's blossoming acoustic music scene. Since then his musical achievements have been recognized with arts council grants, songwriting awards, and artist deals from Taylor Guitars and John Pearse Strings.
David recently returned from his second tour of Australia and New Zealand, the centerpiece of which was three sets at the National Folk Festival of Australia. He'll be returning to Europe this fall for his third tour there.
In the words of the Charleston Folk Society, LaMotte provides "powerful stage presence...top notch guitar playing and chocolatey vocals...an evening of entertainment that can't be beat."
Corners, the sixth of his seven recordings, features twelve previously unrecorded songs and guest appearances by bass virtuoso Michael Manring, songwriters Christine Kane, Beth Wood and Chris Rosser, as well as Fiona Apple's tour bassist Keith Lowe and Ani Difranco's tour saxophonist, Hans Teuber.

Another classic
author: Benny MorrisonDavid's best effort to date includes a myriad of sounds and experiences for the listener. Never one to rest on his laurals, he is always reaching to pull more from his Taylor guitar. Favorites on this record include the opening Lens Cap with its understated ambient feel - one feels as if David is singing this one in their living room just for them. French Kiss (Champs Elyseés) is a love song that romps joyfully along a wistful sentiment of a place and time where he and his girlfriend can be together in Paris. Shadows is a stunning instrumental that blends echo effects and his trademark hammer-on style along with using the guitar for percussion effects to create a sonic wave that's impressive here and even more impressive when you consider that it was recorded live. Deadline is fast becoming a trademark song for David with its topical views on work and life and the trademark refrain, "There's no time like the present - there's no present like time." All in all a masterpiece and his records continue to impress.
Corners is incredible!
author: Mitch OwenOne of the best guitarists that I've heard. Shadows is a showpiece of David's guitar playing excellence! Every song on the CD is uplifting, entertaining and simply enjoyable!
No present like time...
author: starWhen you listen to people walking out of a David gig, they are usually discussing Deadline, a truly memorable song from Corners. It touches minds and hearts. The great thing is that the other songs on the cd are just as enjoyable!
David at his BEST!
author: Carol (in Texas)David's fans waited awhile for Corners, but it was worth the wait! He's still the best singer/songwriter/guitarist. If you have the good fortune to meet him on the road, ask him to tell you about the artwork on the cover of the Corners CD.
