notes
LA ENKANTO is a collective of Filipin@ American poets based in Los Angeles. Their debut CD, In Our Blood, brings together different artists on fifteen tracks with styles including spoken word, solo piano, monologues, hip-hop, guitar and singing, and more. Each poet explores, in their own unique way, issues of love, culture, identity, family, and history. LA ENKANTO members have performed at national and international venues including the J Paul Getty Museum in L.A., the National Writer's Workshop in Delaware, the Rockefeller Center in New York City, Sanctum in Manila (Philippines), and many colleges and universities across the country.
Excerpt from album's liner notes:
Has there ever been a single symbol to define the Filipina/o? Cliches may come to mind, the funniest thing being that many Filipinas/os, especially those in America, have neither seen a carabao in real life nor danced the Tinikling. It seems that Filipinas/os are always in a state of negotiating who and what they are, as if their collective substance is based on a never-ending quest for definitions based on their own terms...
...Our poetry celebrates collective and individual struggles, visions, joys and tragedies; in short, every facet of our daily lives as Filipina/o Angelenas/os.
Let this CD project be a kind of beginning - a single but determined step toward definitions of who we are, on our own terms.
