Argentine jazz: Tango, Argentine folklore, and Candombe meet jazz in NYC

notes

La Balteuband is a NYC based instrumental ensemble lead by Emilio Teubal. His compositions are a blend of jazz and elements of Argentine music, such as rhythms like chacarera and zamba along with the lyricism of tango melodies.

La Balteuband's music consists of rhythmically and harmonically rich pre-composed structures and improvised sections that highlight the musicality of each member of the band. This is what makes each performance of the group so fresh and special.

The compositional influences of Emilio Teubal include Astor Piazolla, Hermeto Pascual, Egberto Gismonti, and great masters of the jazz tradition such as Duke Ellington, Gil Evans, and Charles Mingus.

La Balteuband has performed in New York venues such as the Knitting Factory, Makor, Cornelia Street Cafe, Nublu, Bowery Poetry Club, Galapagos Arts Space, and many more.

Their music marries jazz, classical and Argentine styles, largely composed, yet with outstanding solos from each one of the band members at some point along the musical journey which begins with the folk rhythm of the brief, bright “A Caballo” and ends with the moody twists and turns of the dense tango-jazz that is “Sin Pestanias”

#2 – Capinias Mariano Gil joins the band for this track, and his flute soars above Emilio Teubal’s resonant piano, Moto Fukushima’s electric bass, and the saxophones. Franco Pinna, on drums, keeps a steady clavé beat. A long piano riff is joined by echoing brass. #4 – Twisted Title Emilio Teubal’s native experience with Latin rhythms and tones gives his piano performance a sultry exoticism, with the addition of whispering cymbals and muted clarinet and saxes. Hints of Argentine tango, especially of the contemporary tango genre, abound. #7 – Berry A mystical clarinet opens this track in rippling crescendos, re-appearing later in a slight rhythmic twist. Emilio Teubal takes a rapid riff with brass and drums in energized backup. #9 – Sin Pestanias This is a moody, reflective piece, with an existential clarinet and saxes in a muted midnight mood. The atmospheric tones end the record in relaxed melancholia.

The music of pianist and composer Emilio Teubal may not be familiar to you but his debut album hopes to change that a bit. Argentinean-born Teubal captures an interesting session of light jazz incorporating elements of Argentinean music on La Balteuband. Based in New York, the pianist leads a small ensemble of ethnically diverse musicians from all over the world producing a world jazz sound that you will enjoy. Joining Teubal on this first effort are fellow countryman Franco Pinna (drums), Israeli-born Kobi Solomon (clarinet and saxes), from Japan, Moto Fukushima (bass), and Brazilian Felipe Selles (flute and saxes). The album contains all original compositions from the leader and other members of the band. The music throughout features unique rhythms and harmonies not normally associated with your traditional contemporary jazz sound. The second track, “Capinias” highlights the playing of Teubal on the Fender Rhodes in an up tempo melody that is quite good. This is followed by twelve-minutes of an intricate direction-changing number with “El Sausa” providing a lot of solo space for members of the band in one percussive heavy cut. The tune “Historias Tristes” belongs to the reeds with pronounced performances from the saxes and the flute instruments. Teubal opens up with a beautiful piano intro on “AC in AB” in a nine-minute lively number and one of the best on this disc. La Balteuband provides a very interesting set of fresh new material in a unique musical treat delivered by a first-rate ensemble.
