A straight-ahead swingin' jazz record. A bit of the classic "Blue Note Era" Quintet sound, mixed up with some cool and funky modern twists. There are some up tempo swingin' things, some breezy Brazilian stuff, some intense African rhythms, and some lovely & haunting ballads. Kyle is featured on Tenor & Soprano saxes and flute, and is joined by trumpeter Larry Williams on nine Kyle originals. Also joining him are his long time band mates Hussain Jiffry on bass, Jason Harnell on drums, and Steve Weingart on (a pre-fender) Rhodes piano.

Saxophonist/ Flutist & Composer Robert Kyle has performed and/or recorded with Michael Bolton, Linda Ronstadt, Carol King, Brenda Russell, Lou Rawls, Della Reese, and many others. As a 15 year member and current musical director of blues diva Linda Hopkins band, he has performed all over the world. He has released 7 CD's under his own name and his band has played at many of the top festivals around, performing a lovely mix of instrumental music including straight-ahead, Latin & Brazilian Jazz. He lives in Altadena,CA, and when he's not touring, he keeps a full performance schedule, as well as staying busy in the recording studios.

  • Straight Ahead & Cool!
    author: Cassity

This CD is reminiscent of the early ‘cool’ jazz sounds of the 50’s, making it easy to just kick back & enjoy….another wonderful addition from a fine composer & musician.

  • Great, super, terrific!!!
    author: Betty Bryant

I have been a Robert Kyle fan for some years and DOORS is now my favorite of his recordings. Besides his technique (as well as his fellow musicians' on this cd), his arrangements are outstanding.

  • Magic needs a magician. Mr Kyle pulled another rabbit from the hat.
    author: Steve Roberts

It's hard to soothe and excite all at once but that's the magic that this title achieves. Here in London, England we just keep playing the thing and folk just keep listening. It could be the musical equivalent of perpetual motion.

  • Burning stuff, great playing and writing
    author: Frank Briggs

Rob Kyle is one of the more gifted sax players on the LA music scene. I own all of his records and am equally impressed by his writing. Great musicians, great performances, great music... a totally winning combination. I highly recommend Robert Kyle.

  • Mellow jazz - puts you in a mellow mood!
    author: Deb Kinley

This CD makes you think of the 50's and 60's jazz, with a modern edge. It's a good sit back, relax, and read CD, that keeps your feet boppin' a little too...

  • really coookin'straight ahead!!!
    author: Frank josephs

This CD really kicks you in the a**!! Rob Kyle, while widely known for his Brazilian playing, showed me that he can swing with the best of em' Oh... and I should also mention that the band is with himn every step. Great songs too. Highly recommended!

  • Nice Straight Ahead Jazz
    author: John Gretzinger

I like what Robert does and how he does it. This album is a throw-back to the "modern jazz" with which I grew up. The band has that cool, smooth 50's and 60's sound but with today's harmonies and arrangements. Sound like a contradiction? Well maybe, but it's there. You can almost see a Pink Panther cartoon or movie playing over Buster's Freeze. Alot of that comes from the bass and Rhodes piano. "Dawn of the Zulu" has an almost Miles Davis feel to it. Through out, the musicians support each other well and the result is an excellent blending of "old" and new. Highly recommended. jdg

  • Wonderfully written, superbly executed.
    author: Andrew Carney

If you are a lover of Jazz music, this CD is a must. Robert Kyle has once again compiled a collection of compositions that are both sophisticated and yet soulfull. Each selection is a gem and demonstrates the highest level of passionate improvisation. Well written, expertly played, and wonderfully recorded. A+.
