notes

Coronado Sand is the first musical effort headed by Gerry Kunkel and Jim Hayward, joined by a group of Washington D.C.'s most sought after musicians and composers to create an album of hard-hitting, heart-felt originals featuring deep grooves and thoughtful improvisations.

Backed by D.C.'s finest sidemen, Kunkel and Hayward bring a fresh open sound to Contemporary Jazz. Don't let the name of this CD fool you, this isn't a "lie on the beach, feelin' the breeze-blowin" kind of music. CORONADO SAND sweeps you off your feet like a Pacific Ocean wave and soon you are surfin' through R&B edged, jazz flavored guitar solos, Brazilian-style sambas and rippin' soulful sax. Just when you are ready, CORONADO SAND breaks shore with lush ballads featuring finger style acoustic guitar and haunting harmonica sounds that pull you back for replay after replay.

Gerry Kunkel performs in settings ranging from TV and film, musical theatre, jazz combos to classical ensembles and the National Symphony. He has performed with Aretha Franklin, Ron Carter, Clark Terry, Diane Reeves, Patrice Rushen to name a few. He teaches guitar studies at Howard University and the University of Md. and maintains a busy free-lance schedule in the Washington D.C. area.

Jim Hayward is the former lead alto for the U.S. Navy Commodores and has played with Herb Ellis, Bill Potts along with numerous others and is currently living and performing in Miami Fla. and touring the country with several groups.
