Tales of fallen idols, psycho killers, cities at war, and bigotry among fish. Meandering between quirky jazz and piano based alternative, it's a twisted music-box of an album, inspired by Danny Elfman and Kate Bush on equal part.

notes

„Out” is Gabriela Kulka’s second independently released album.
Much like her debut, it is firmly rooted in a very Kurt Weill’esque sense of cabaret, but the new arrangements, varying instrumentation, and a far more confident production, have expanded its scope of mood and style into diverse, often surprising directions.

And so, we have the fast, jazzy piano romps of old, and dark serenades depicting fairytale visitations, but right next to them are the 80’s influenced pop of “Krolestwo i pol”, Beach Boys style backing vocals of “Shark”, operatic (s)punk of “Death won’t save the day”, and mysterious, filmic climates in the likes of “Out” and “An Orange”.

What remains a constant is Gabriela’s rich and flexible vocal style, rising and plunging with the music, nailing the emotional undercurrents of the album.

And just like the music, in turn intimate and rapacious, the songs’ subject matters cover a broad range of attitudes - some distance themselves with irony and tongue-in-cheek cool, others plunge right in and go straight for the throat (or heart). Lovers are shunned, cities fall, artists sell out, fairytale-entities seduce little girls, people die… that sort of fun. It’s all in there.

As far as lyrics are concerned, “Out” marks the first time four songs in Gabriela’s native tongue, Polish, have been included. You can find the lyrics’ translations on her website www.gabakulka.com .

In short, what ‘Out’ sets out to be, is a trip to the fringes of what a dark musical theatre should be, a delicate music box and a tumultuous rock performance wrapped into one.

I listen a lot of music, many artist, many styles, few new albums a day. And this one is one of those unforgettable ones...Kulka as such a young artist knocked out most of the elder polish and worlds 'singers'. One of my best personal discovery in this year. I wish to hear her live in london. And I know I will:)The world will get know her after us;)Gabriela!Don't forget us...your one of the first funs;)good luck!powodzenia!

Being Polish myself, I must say that my discovery of Gaba Kulka is late; heard her on 14th Jan 2007 on the radio...Her vocal's extraordinary, her lyrics mysterious, and the music enchanting...The world should get to know her. That's my modest opinion. What do you think?? Wish she had a chance to be known by more and more of us!

  • A triumph

Seriously, this album is something else. It's of such a startling quality, it deserves to be known and loved by hundreds of thousands, if not millions. If Gabriela Kulka continues in relative obscurity then we'll have proof positive that all the talent in the world doesn't count for much --- because she has all the talent in the world. This isn't hyperbole. From the jazzy, impressive piano, to the expressive, versatile voice, to the tunes which are as catchy as they are eccentric, to the clever and insightful lyrics . . . there is nothing she can't do well. What's more, the sound quality of this disc is a definite step up from most independently recorded releases --- it sounds perfectly professional, clear and crisp and clean. Obviously a lot of time and effort went into this. Miss Scylla was a warm-up lap. With "Out," Gabriela Kulka truly has arrived. Do yourself a favour and GET THIS ALBUM!

  • Set the bar for 2006.

"OUT" is one of the finest, most adventurous albums to emerge in 2006. The fact that everyone in the world hasn't yet had the pleasure of experiencing this adventure is ashame, those lucky enough to grab this album will truly feel they're experiencing something that the music world has never heard before. Her songs are brimming with personality, hypnotic lyrics, and some of the most interesting uses of the piano as an instrument ever. Do yourself a favor and delve in.

  • still quirky as ever

I also have Kulka's first album Between Miss Scylla and a Hard Place, and I found that one a little less accessible. They're both odd and quirky, but this one seems more melodic somehow.

  • let it carry you into another world

Gabriela has a way to echant and mesmerize her audience like I haven't seen many artists capable of doing. She takes you for a ride into her world of sound which is so rich of emotion and variation that you forget all around you. She uses her voice to seduce, to play and tease, sometimes purring, sometimes angelic sweet and then again so strong and mature you will not want this ride to ever stop. I love her new album and can't wait for more of her refreshing and fascinating art.

  • another big step forward by a swell new artist

Out, by Gabriela Kulka. In which our Gaba raises her game yet again, producing her best work to date and putting herself on a par with many of the faboo artists we discuss in this here forum. Her eccentric vocalizations are not gonna be to everybody's taste (just look at how divided folks are on Regina Spektor), but I really like them, and as with Regina, they're backed up by solid songcraft that takes a unique grab-bag of influences and melds it into something all her own. And, as before, Gaba shows a particularly deft one-gal-band touch, coming up with wildly creative arrangements that turn the fact that she does it all herself into an actual advantage. I really, really hope that this can get out there and get heard. Gaba, your rabid cult following awaits you.

  • It's not a secret anymore, it's out and awesome!

Three years of wait was well worth it. Since the Scylla feast I have been waiting for this album and it's everything I have hoped for. It's full of great compositions and most importantly an amazing vocal performance. Whatever I say here won't make justice to the beauty of her voice. The playful, clever way she sings makes you feel like you are fallowing a play. I like this feeling so much. The content of lyrics are very varied and wise. Definetly pay attention to them. Polish songs are beautiful especially the 12th track, "Korlestwo i Pol" is my fave. "New to somebody", "Death won't save the day" are my other initial favorites but with time others will be included, I know from the experience. It's highly recommended for any music fan.
