Hip alt-folk rock with thought

notes

“Chicago musician Kristin Cotts has what many recording artists don’t –her own vision,” says Antonia B. Johnston of Chicagogigs.com. Her lyrically driven songs dance and leap from the whimsy of 1930's swing to the sophistication of classical music to the honesty of the folk movement to the unpredictable creativity of alt. rock. According to Patrick Conlan of the Illinois Entertainer, “[H]er delivery and evocative lyrics are passionate, and her tempered, folksy songcraft is zesty and soulful."
Originally from the Chicago area, Kristin has lived in such disparate places as North Dakota and France, with stops in Minnesota and Michigan along the way. She is a long distance runner, loves playing in large bodies of water, and has a knack for languages and a passion for learning. She writes when she feels like it, which is pretty often, and has spent a lot of hours alone taking her guitar playing in its own choppy direction.
The quirky chop of Kristin’s guitar weaves its way under, over, and around the peculiar beauty of her voice and the virtuosity of her band named What About Rosalind. In 2006, she teamed up with guitarist/bassist Steve Schuster to produce the twelve-song album Spatial Relations. Fans of Kristin Cotts also like Natalie Merchant, 10,000 Maniacs, Laura Veirs, and the Roches. Her music has recently been played on WEFT in Champaign, IL and WSBF in South Carolina.

  • This is an excellent CD!

Kristin Cotts is an unsigned singer/songwirter from Chicago. She is often classified as a folk artist, but there is a much greater dimension to her music than acoustic folk. Her songs have a strong alt. rock/indie current running in it as well. She has a beautiful voice and writes the most thoughtful and meaningful lyrics you will hear. My favorite tracks are the slightly jazzy "Trouble", the beautifully simple arrangment of "I Know I Know", and the quirky "Take a Little Break". Fans of Laura Viers, Sufjan Stevens, Rosie Thomas, Jose Gonzalez, and similar artists are sure to love this CD!
