notes

From New York City come Kitty & The Kowalskis with their new 'Chinese Democracy' cd on AMP Records. These Big Apple veterans dish out some of the classiest, hookiest tunes you've ever heard. From high energy rockers to more refined "tender" moments, The Kowalskis whip out track after track of top notch tuneage. With soaring female vocals backed up by some razor sharp musicianship, comparisons to Blondie, the Muffs and the Go-Go's have been thrown about but Kitty & The Kowalskis are in a class by themselves. There are even two tracks dedicated to the memories of Dee Dee and Joey Ramone. Grab a copy of 'Chinese Democracy' today and experience the rush and emotion of a true New York Minute blasting from your speakers! This is the second full-length album and most daring effort to date, "Chinese Democracy", after releasing "All Hopped Up on Goofballs" as the Kowalskis.

What do they sound like? The Kowalskis' first show was opening for Iggy Pop. They have played with a lot of the classic New York bands such as The Ramones, The Dictators, and D Generation and are sometimes associated with the late 70s punk sound of other bands they have supported like The Toy Dolls, The Dickies, The Rezillos, The Undertones, Vice Squad, and Stiff Little Fingers. They are not retro-rock as they have equally held their own with contemporaries with a range of styles such as the The Briefs, The Aquabats, Groovie Ghoulies, Less Than Jake, The Get Up Kids, Snuff, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, The Muffs, and The Paybacks.

Kitty & The Kowalskis have no gimmicks. They have weathered punk rock v3.0,neo-glam, the power-pop revival and dance rock. They withstood touring the US, Europe and Canada, mostly organized, booked and promoted with their own dirty money.

Front-person Kitty Kowalski's aim is true. Her love for friends, bands and music is notorious. She is a chronic contributor and enabler and never misses any opportunity to participate in either. She is your 100% on-the-go lifer....

From start to finish this record rocks. I have been listening to it for 4 days straight on my 100 mile round trip daily commute and it isn't leaving the player anytime soon. Do yourself a favor and get the greatest album ever titled Chinese Democracy...this includes past, present, & future albums by this name.

  • Nice break from commercial bands
    author: Chris

This album is a nice departure from the standard moderm rock fare on almost all commercial radio stations. I enjoyed their previous effort (All Hopped Up On Goofballs) and it appears all the lessons learned from that release have paid off with Chinese Democracy. I'm looking forward to more music from this vibrant band.

  • chinese democracy is a punk rock classic
    author: a fan

chinese democracy is a bubblegum pop punk rock red nail varnished middle finger at big arena rock bands, showing everyone how to make a classic album. 'oh dee dee' is a legendary song surely set to be the bands signature tune.

  • Chinese Democracy = spectacularly fun rock & roll
    author: Mike

Writing great, awesomely melodic rock & roll songs is an exceptionally difficult task, in itself. To accomplish that goal with lyrics that are highly intelligent and carry a serious emotional payload requires a sort of artistic brilliance very few possess. It's exactly the sort of artistry Kitty Kowalski brings to the table. Chinese Democracy is filled with rocking songs that command you to get up and dance - the record has more hooks than a world championship fishing tournament. But what sets it apart and makes it truly special is that these songs also have meaning. Kitty is a woman who has LIVED, and she has an incredible talent for sharing the highs and the lows (sometimes within the verses of a single song) with the rest of us. I can't recommend a record more highly.
