BIO:
Michael Kollwitz has been playing The Chapman Stick® * since 1976 and was one of inventor Emmett Chapman’s first music students. He studied with Chapman for 10 years and is considered one of the world’s top Chapman ‘Stickists’.
Michael began playing the revolutionary stringed instrument after witnessing a live performance given by Chapman in Southern California. After years of practice and study, in the early 80’s he began his own performance career. Since that time, he has performed extensively throughout the Southwestern US and has given well over a thousand performances at virtually every type of venue.
He has been an opening act for The Beach Boys, was once offered full-time work at Disneyland and has an extensive client list that includes everything from Fortune 500 companies to civic organizations. He has performed at festivals, fairs, upscale resorts, fine dining establishments, weddings and many other venues. (You can view 65+ reference letters from happy past clients at: http://www.MichaelKollwitz.com/references )
Mike has also been- and continues to be- featured on numerous TV and radio stations in the Western US and nationwide, including “All Things Considered” on PBS. He’s been featured in many newspapers, magazines and other media. His music was selected for inclusion in the very first CD compilation of ‘Stick’ music and his photo can be found in the first ‘Stick’ instruction book, “Free Hands”. In May 2007, CurrentTV purchased the rights to one of his videos for national broadcast. NPR’s popular nationally broadcast show, “Morning Edition”, began featuring tracks from his recent releases in the summer of 2008- delighting listeners in hundreds of markets across the country.
One of the most prolific Chapman Stick musical artists, Kollwitz has had eleven (11) independent releases: 8 audio CDs, a “Live In Concert” DVD (10/06) and 2 digital download albums- one of which was the world’s first digital download album of Chapman Stick music. They are currently offered on more than 30 different sites. “Hawaiian Paradise” (08/08) is his most recent audio CD release. It was created entirely on Maui and has a distinct Hawaiian flair- including four tracks in duo with pedal steel guitar. Prior to that, “Waterfallin’” (05/06) was the first-ever CD to prominently feature the new higher-range Alto Stick® developed by Chapman in 2005. His other releases are: “Steppin’ Out” (01/00), “Moments” (03/03), “Carnival” (12/03), “Memories” (05/04), “Frosty The Stickman” (12/04) and “Here Comes Spring” (05/05). His digital download albums are “20 Greatest Hits” (10/06) and “Greatest Hits- Vol. 2″ (02/08)
Although he has an extensive repertoire, his music has been described as a relaxing blend of jazz and blues (with a Hawaiian flavor!). The Stick has a very unique, pleasant tone that seems to relax listeners. The sweet, soothing tones of the instrument are said to simply melt away the stress of the day. He resides in Lahaina on the island of Maui and performs at some of Maui’s most prestigious events and resorts.

* The Chapman Stick® is easily the most radical innovation in stringed instruments since the invention of the electric guitar. Conceived in the mid 70’s by inventor Emmett Chapman of Los Angeles, The Stick is played with both hands; simultaneously playing BOTH bass and melody parts independently- by tapping and holding strings to frets (rather than by pluck or strum) The Stick incorporates the essence of guitar, bass, keyboards and drums- all into one instrument! With these unique capabilities, The Stick can sound like 2 or 3 musicians at once in the hands of a talented player.

author: Greg HowardSacramento-based Michael Kollwitz (A.K.A. Michael K), is one of the most experienced and most active Stick players in the world today. This year alone he has played over 100 concerts and released a new CD, a new live concert DVD and a downloadable "greatest hits." collection. With a performing career that extends back to the early 1980's, Michael has been there practically since the beginning of the Stick phenomenon, picking up his first instrument in 1976 after seeing Emmett demonstrating it at a local college. Thirty years, hundreds of performances and ten releases later, he's developed his own distinctive style that's bright and engaging, winning over audiences with his affable stage presence, lyrical melodies and fiery solos. His repertoire draws from all directions, jazz, Latin, pop, classical and rock and roll. From his base in Sacramento, Michael frequently travels to art fairs, festivals and even airports, turning on thousands of new listeners to his own unique brand of Stick music. Michael's most recent release is his Live in Concert DVD. Recorded last summer in Sacramento, California, this 80-minute disc highlights what an accomplished soloist and entertaining performer Michael has become. For twenty tracks (and five costume changes) he alternately wows the crowd with driving upbeat grooves and then chills them down with soulful ballads. The list of tracks includes several originals, plus jazz standards like "Summertime", and "Black Orpheus," and rock classics like "Little Wing," "Nights in White Satin" and "California Dreamin'". This DVD and his latest CD, Waterfallin' both feature the new Alto Stick, making Michael one of the first players to fully integrate its sweet high sound into his music. It's a natural progression for an artist that's always been willing to explore what's new in the Stick world and integrate it into his own art. Waterfallin', Michael's 7th CD, was released last April. His tasteful arrangements feature layered Grand Stick and MIDI synth beds with beautiful Alto melodies laid over the top on most of the tracks. You can read Jim Reilly's review of Waterfallin' from a recent Sticknews digest here: Sticknews #288. Michael is a busy performer. Check out his upcoming performance schedule here.
