Burkina Faso meets Senegal in Europe! Kokoura means 'something new' and the group was formed around the Senegalese masterdrummer Mousse Dramé and the two brothers Adama & Moussa Dembele from Burkina Faso. The group was completed with 3 young musicians from Amsterdam and the wonderful Brazilian singer Ceumar. Influenced by afrobeat, samba, desertblues, soul, reggae and traditional African music they are able to blend and mix all these colors into a wonderfull new sound!

Al weer een tijd terug schreven we op www.rundfunk.nl over een Amsterdams sahara blues project waarvan we de track Mousse Mribiyasa doorgespeeld hadden gekregen. Inmiddels is de groep Kokoura rondom de Senegalese drummer Mousse Dramé en Adama & Moussa Dembele uit Burkina Faso uitgebreid tot een complete band en hebben ze een plaat opgenomen. Niet alleen de groep is in omvang uitgebreid, maar ook de stijl: gebleven zijn de west afrikaanse ritmes en virtuoze melodielijnen met een snuf afrobeat in de vorm van puntige blazers, maar de Braziliaanse bossa stijl zang van zangeres Ceumar stuurt de muziek weer subtiel een andere richting op. En dat werkt eigenlijk best goed. Zoals hoort bij een goede crossover heb je eigenlijk nauwelijks meer door dat je hier stijlen door elkaar hoort die normaal netjes gescheiden zijn door een niet al te smal binnenwater, de Atlantische Oceaan. Anitié kabbelt lekker door, en dat bedoel ik dan niet negatief: alle instrumenten verweven hun melodieen met elkaar zoals dat in west afrikaanse muziek zo goed kan en gaan in een lange trip door. Dat zou je saai kunnen vinden na een tijdje, maar ik kan het eigenlijk wel waarderen; je hoeft bij deze muziek niet elke tel op te letten, maar je kunt het gewoon ondergaan. Voeg daaraan toe een prima productie en je hebt een van de leukste Nederlandse platen van het jaar.

Gravado em Amsterdam e algumas vozes em Sampa, neste 2008, por Ben Mendes."
