Born and raised in Hawaii, Harry attended the University of Hawaii were he studied classical guitar. After many years of playing rock and roll, he became interested in slack-key guitar and began studying with slack-key master, Raymond Kane. Harry continues to play slack-key in Raymond’s style. He furthered his study of Hawaiian music by learning Hawaiian lap-steel guitar from Jerry Byrd.

This is a beautifully crafted album, keeping your interest from beginning to end, while taking you on a musical journey across the island and back to bygone days. Harry, also a full time music teacher, brings his breadth, expertise, and attention to detail to deliver a flawless performance. You’ll want to listen time and again to this one. This is Harry’s 4th CD since he started recording in 1994. His mature voice adds a lyrical and soothing melody over the title track. The steel guitar work takes you back to days of mentor Jerry Byrd and Hawaii Calls… The 2nd track, Black and White Rag, immediately gets your feet tapping. It’s easy to imagine rocking on the veranda of an old plantation home, watching the keikis play, and gazing out on a beautiful Hawaiian sunset while listening to this one. Willy’s Tune is a light, upbeat and delicate ukulele piece that really reminds you what ukulele means in Hawaiian (‘dancing flea’) – Harry’s fingers really do dance! Kilima Waltz is a steel guitar instrumental that has you yearning to dance with your sweetie under a banyan tree canopy of Waikiki stars. Mauanloa, a tribute to teacher Raymond Kane, is a classic and very sweet (‘nahenahe’) slack guitar tune backed by Harry’s soothing lyrics – or is his guitar work backing his vocals? Hard to tell, they are seamlessly interwoven. Pikake - guest vocals and ukulele backed by Harry’s steel guitar deliver a hauntingly romantic love call. Kai – exactly. You’re at the ocean (‘kai’) on a wonderfully sunny day with the light dancing on gentle breaking waves. A wonderful instrumental interlude. Ku‘uipo – thoughtful ukulele instrumental. Chickadee – steel swing backed by guitar, reminds you that Jerry Byrd had his roots back in Nashville before he came to Hawaii in the ‘70’s. Luau Hula – vocal harmonies over traditional slack guitar. Pua Sadinia (I Never Will Forget) – classic instrumental from Raymond Kane that would bring a tear to his eye. Sand – dreamy steel instrumental, you can hear the waves lapping at the beach. Lepe Ula Ula – After Sand, it’s time to get up and shake your okole. Harry plays here as part of a 4-part vocal quartet that won the Ka Himeni Ana Song Contest. La Elima – same quartet slows it down for the farewell tune of the album that leaves you begging for more. Hana hou Harry! Well done !!
