notes
Kim Ward was raised in Whakatane, New Zealand, now living in Tauranga NZ. Kim is a singer/songwriter and guitarist.'Outside my square' is Kim Ward's debut album. Kim's vocals and acoustic guitar form the core of all of her songs, which range from the slide infected blues of 'Hello friend' to the busier and heavier full band treatment of 'blind man walking, to the dreamy 'high here'. Through the album Kim uses rich, ringing open chords and trademark odd meter timings to stamp a unique mark on this engaging collection of songs. Lyrically her songs are upfront and personal, and moving and deeply insightful on the other. This is an album featuring different guitar styles, rich vocals and layered harmonies.
The inner sleeve contains some of Kim's paintings and drawings.

NEWS
May 2006:
It is a very exciting time, I am currently getting my new material together and am heading into the studio within the next few weeks to start recording a second album. The recording will take place at Tracie and Brian de jongs 'eieio' recording studio. (check out Tracies website) www.traciedejong.com, This album will have a totally different sound to 'outside my square' my approach will be a little different this time around, and I am so pleased to be working alongside the lovliest people around. I am not putting a time limit on how long this project will take. The studio is set in the countryside, so I plan to relax and enjoy the atmosphere on my journey!

Kim Ward is an emerging singer/songwriter
author: SIC MAgazineShe spent 7 months putting together her debut album, Outside my Square', the album is a collection of songs written over a few years and features some fine musicians. Some of the material was recorded back and forth between guitar legend POM in the U.K and Kim, although she started the album with only some studio experience, Kim says it was definetly a learning curve for future projects. Before I even put this cd in my player I was hit by the soulful, talented art that decorates the cover and cd input - this chick is an artist in the real sense of the word. When finally I tore my eyes away and opened my ears, I was impressed. I didn't even notice when the album came full circle and track 1 started playing again - in fact it took me half the song before I realized I was actually humming along with it. If that's not a full pass in the quality test, I don't know what is. This is the perfect music to clean the house to on a sunny morning. Easy listening, not quite jazz, not really pop, just soulful songs, acoustic guitar and a truly beautiful voice. With the exception of 2 tracks, Kim plays her own guitar and most of the extra percussion. I honestly reccomend hearing this album.
A voice that will draw you into songs that will move you
author: Jo BaneThis album is something quite unique, Kim has not stuck to any format, her tunings, her timing, she bends it to fit the expression, there are never any rules in her songwriting, she shows no mercy to herself as she searches to grow through self examination, and her live performance really shows this, somewhat shy, yet so lyrically open about her heart, A voice with remarkable quality and originality. On this album, be sure that you will find a song that will reach you
a warm and pleasant album.
author: New Zealand musician magazineKim Ward has a delightful voice, warm and original. A Tauranga based singer/songwriter, Ward appears regularly in duo's but this is her first solo effort. The 11 all-original tracks feature some fine guitar playing by Ward herself, Gorgeous percussion and fabulous bass, good arrangements, all in all a warm and pleasant album, the songs are unhurried and the textures rich.

a beautiful.beautiful album Kim...calming, warm and ethereally blue! [if that makes sense :) ] ..timeless classic style that's just purely up my alley.. i hear shades of a mellowed Dido, Sinead O'C and little flecks of the kiwi singer from the 'headless chickens'..but you soo make it all your own with the depth of your voice and those whisping harmonies... just gorgeous.. my fave is 'breathe'.. lovely lyrics. but Created By You comes a close second with that magic guitaring.. the art is stunning too..very representative of the music.. ..an album that is for more than a moment.....cheers!
awesome harmonies, mixed with guitars...
author: Michael Kingjust had a chance to hear this cd while in New Zealand recently. Was blown away by the awesome sound and great mix of harmonies with guitar, glad to hear this talent for creating music has been ignited again, with this talent it would not have been out for long...
distinctive new-age folk showcasing her heartfelt songwriting and her confident,
author: the weekend sun/Winston Watusi11 original songs in a very distinctive slightly unusual songwriting style. An eclectic range of musicians came on board to colour the songs and all do valuble work. The focal point, however, and main strength of the album is Kim's singing, both her lead vocals and the beautiful layered harmonies that she supplies in many songs. She is particulary effective on the blues-tinged 'hello friend' and has the strength to rise above a full band in the album's biggest production number 'Blind man walking' Perhaps the most interesting performance, however is 'created by you' U.K guitarist POM recorded backing tracks in his own studio- a lovely array of virtuoso acoustic guitars. He sent these over to New Zealand where Kim overlaid her vocals the result sounds very natural and rather lovely...pleasurable sounds of the totally homegrown...
TAKE ON JOURNEY FROM EMOTIONAL DEPTHS TO ULTIMATE HIGHS

SUCH A BLEND OF DIFFERENT STYLES FROM SOFT BLUES TO DASHES OF FOLK/JAZZ/POP, AND VAN HALLEN STYLE GUITAR WORK THIS CD HAS IT ALL. KIM'S VOCALS ARE AN INSTRUMENT IN THEIR OWN RIGHT, BLENDED GREAT BV'S FURTHER ENHANCING & SOMEWHAT HAUNTING THE LISTENER INTO ANOTHER ZONE. MUSIC LIKE THIS DOESN'T COME ALONG OFTEN, YOU KNOW ITS COMES FROM THE SOUL, A MUST FOR EVERY TRUE MUSIC LOVERS COLLECTION. GREAT WORK CAN'T WAIT TO HERE MORE.
