notes

Feb. 8, 2004

"No question about the voice: it's worn, aged, soulful, defiant, utterly lacking smooth edges - an enormously compelling instrument to anyone enamored of blue-eyed soul"
David McGee - Rolling Stone Record Guide

"I don't think I've ever enjoyed greater rapport with a singer. With Kim in the studio and me in the booth, the good feelings flowed back and forth almost mystically. A nod of the head and she understood what I was saying, where I was pointing her. She's a fine musician, her sultry voice a marvelous instrument."
Jerry Wexler, legendary producer, from his auto-biography "Rhythm & Blues: A Life In American Music"

The new "Chasin' Wild Trains" recording project started last year when Kim went into the studio with her band and some of her co-writer friends. She had been busy writing and performing here in Nashville, and it seemed obvious that it was time to share some music. It was so good to be in the studio again with so many amazing players.

For the last ten years Kim has worked with a small band and it has given her an opportunity to experiment with her material. There are two versions of the band, a small acoustic four piece, and then the frequent addition of drums & bass. There is so much music here with so many opportunities to play live, and all of these "live shows" have strongly impacted her performance on the new album. "Nashville has a great creative atmosphere. It's a small, close-knit and musically diverse community that you can't find anywhere else".

There have been constant "in the round" shows with such artists as John Hiatt, Michael McDonald, Steve Cropper, Martina McBride, Deana Carter, Al Anderson (NRBQ), Jeffrey Steele, Matraca Berg, Jeff Hanna (Dirt Band),Greg Barnhill, Suzi Bogguss and others that have been enthusiastically received. When time allows, Carnes enjoys taking her acoustic/song-writer show on the road to a variety of notable performing arts centers. From small venues like a vintage theatre in Santa Fe to a 5,000 seat outdoor amphitheatre in Seattle, her live performances are natural, powerful and entertaining. Showing her versatility, she has even performed with the Nashville Symphony

Some of her pals who co-wrote and played on the new album are:
Richard Bennett (Dire Straits, Steve Earle), Angelo (Kings of Leon), Al Anderson (NRBQ), Chuck Prophet (superb alt. artist/writer) Jeff Hanna (Nitty, Gritty Dirt Band), Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Jeffrey Steele, Greg Barnhill, Mark Jordan, Billy Panda, Tim Lauer,& Anders Osborne. Craig Krampf (Kim's drummer from her original band) also played on this CD.

Her live band for the past ten years were key players on this album. They are:

Tim Lauer: (Keys, Vocals & "Accordion Boy") Tim is in demand as a session player and writer. He spends considerable time in Europe (mostly Sweden) writing, playing and doing production.

Billy Panda: (Guitar, Mandolin & Vocals) Billy is from Chicago where he had tremendous success as a writer-producer-musician. He is currently in great demand as a session player in Nashville.

Greg Barnhill: (Guitar, Vocals) Greg is from Louisiana which helps explain the roots of his remarkably soulful style. He has had multiple hits as a writer, two very conspicuous ones being "Walkaway Joe" by Trisha Yearwood & Don Henley, and "House Of Love" by Vince Gill and Amy Grant.

Dave Ellingson: (Percussion, Vocals) Through the years Dave has co-written many songs with Kim and performed with her on the road.

//// A native of Los Angeles, Carnes knew from the time that she was three years old that she was going to write songs and perform them for people. Success was never in doubt. Carnes garnered her first record deal in 1972 with famed record producer Jimmy Bowen. After a stint with A&M Records, she became the first signed artist at the newly established EMI-America (Capitol)in 1978. Soon after, her duet with Gene Cotton on "You're a Part of Me" became her first top-forty hit. She then took on the unusual task of co-writing, along with her husband Dave Ellingson, an entire concept album for Kenny Rogers. The result was his multi-platinum seller "Gideon", which included their own chart-topping duet, "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer". Another top 10 hit followed with a remake of Smokey Robinson's "More Love".

...Then came the marvelously haunting "Bette Davis Eyes". Winning Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, the smash hit propelled Carnes' Mistaken Identity album to number one in the U.S. and almost every country in the world. Assured of a place in music history, Carnes continued to augment her success through the 1980's. While releasing acclaimed albums like Voyeur (1982), Café Racers (1983), Barking At Airplanes (1985), and Lighthouse (1986), Carnes' album View from The House (1988) yielded "Crazy In Love", a top 10 Adult Contemporary hit, while Barking At Airplanes produced the top 15 hit "Crazy In The Night". She also wrote and sang "I'll Be Here Where The Heart Is" for the grammy-winning sound track Flashdance, and sang with Kenny Rogers and James Ingram on the top 15 hit "What About Me?". In addition, she was part of an all-star chorus on the legendary "We Are The World" recording and video. Carnes also wrote and produced the top 20 song "Make No Mistake He's Mine, a duet she recorded with Barbra Streisand. In 2001 Kim performed a duet with Jeff Bridges of "Burning Ring Of Fire" for his film "The Contender". She also has a track ("You Made My Skin Burn") from her new album in his soon-to-be-released film "The Moguls".

Kim Carnes is a wellspring of soul-stirring lyrics and melodies. In total harmony when composing music, she thrives on the creative process and the opportunity to work with people she loves.

A wonderful album by Kim Carnes! I'm actually a huge Rod Stewart fan and found this record only by chance. Always knew Kim Carnes as a special artist with an incredible voise but forgot her with the years. Now this CD really seams to be an all new landmark recording. Great!!

  • This CD is fantastic. One of her best ever!

Kim Carnes is back better than ever. Chasin' Wild Trains blends her unique voice with some fantastic music. It is great to hear her passionate singing again!

  • SO Great to Hear Kim Again!
    author: Frank Mellen

It was SO, SO great to find out about this CD! My wife and I had pretty much given up hope of ever hearing a new "album" from Kim. Just to hear that incredible voice, which manages to sound so world-weary and full of life at the same time, was amazing. And the instrumentation and musicians - incredible and unique as always! Kim, you'll always be a favorite!

  • a really thrilling collection of songs
    author: david stash

a student came into my office while "bette davis eyes" was on the radio. she said that was her favorite song. curious, i went to kim carnes' website to see what she was doing these days, saw this cd, ordered it from cd baby (you guys/gals are a great company!!) and haven't had it out of the player since. a really great selection of songs which have the trademark kim carnes' sound, but written with more texture and depth than "pop" songs. i highly recommend this wonderful, emotional, and tuneful disc.

  • A choice slice of Americana
    author: Tim

I have every album every released by Kim Carnes, including every soundtrack. I have to say this is her artistic high point, so far. CHASIN' WILD TRAINS evokes all the rich, savory atmosphere of an afternoon drive through the heartland. "Still Warmed by the Trill" and "One Beat at a Time" are worth the price of the entire playlist. But every tune here is a gem. What I have always enjoyed about Kim at her best is her willingness to allow the rough edges of the production to remain. It is so effective here because the songs are so raw (emotionally). The CD has a literary feeling to it, as well, like you're immersed in a Faulker or O'Connor short story, but with a kind, fragile narrator. If that makes sense. Anyway, buy it. Share it with someone you love or someone who broke your heart.

I loved so much listening to the news Kim Carnes songs. Goodnight Angel and Lucid Dreams are my favorites. Please, I would like so much your DVD with all your videos: does it make you remember; don't fall in love with a dreamer; more love; and others! Kim, I am your fan since 1980. I'm 41 years old now and I have a dream: TO KNOW MY ONLY FAVORITE SINGER KIM CARNES. Thank you, I'm still alive thank God and your songs. Jayro Mamede.

  • is the best comeback of this year!
    author: steph ( France)

I think Kim Carnes is one of the most underrated singer in Europe! She deserves more and more. Unfortunately here in France she is considered and remembered only for the song BETTE DAVIS EYES...is not right! She is brilliant ,her voice is wanderfull and warm and this album is one of the best of this year! Please kim give us a dvd with the videos of your career ( including the INVITATION TO DANCE video...)!!!! Don't leave us so long alone!

Finally some music that goes straight for the heart. She is an amazing artist and she should have never gone away

  • She's Back
    author: Sue

The song Goodnight Angel is worth the price of the CD. The lady's voice is showing its age, but she has always been so good, mellowing out a little just shows she's human. Loved her then, still love her material now. When can we expect the next one?

  • Love that raspy voice..can't get enough.

Only cd I've had in the auto player for a week now. New tunes from a special favorite. Especially enjoy #2 sound track as well as most all the others.

  • Welcome back, Ms Carnes !
    author: Louis F. Dallaire

It had been too long since we had heard from Kim Carnes, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of her generation. This album is a welcome return. The raspy yet expressive voice is still intact, and it conveys as much emotion and passion as it always has. The album has a bluesy-rock feeling to it, and each of the twelve tracks is fantastic. Some of the album's best tracks are the touching "Goodnight Angel", "Just to see you smile", "If I was an angel", "All about time" and the moving "Runaway". The lyrics are honest and sharp and the production is as real as it gets - no programming, no ProTools, no AutoTune, just real music made by real musicians, fronted by a courageous artist who's always stood by her artistic beliefs. Let's just hope it doesn't take another decade before we hear again from Kim Carnes !

  • Good summer music
    author: wedge

Good light music for the summer. Tried it unheard through the recommendations thing-y, thinking I was going to get the work of some 'new to the scene' female artist. (As with movie reviews, i only skim album reviews.) Delightfully surprised - voice is interesting, even ageless, and tantalisingly familiar. Lyrics are a bit fluffy for my taste, but as I said, it's good summer listening.

  • Thanks Kim; you are fantastic!!
    author: Trevor in Newfoundland, Canada

I received this CD today, and already I have played it through 4 times!! I only wish I would have known sooner this album was released; it's worth every penney...and then some!! It's hard to pick a favorite song because all are so wonderful. With that said, I have played Lucid Dreams about 10 times today. Since I only play Kim Carnes music in my car, this one will be in my CD player for at least a month. And Kim, if you do read this: Everybody says you're a hero, baby you know you've always been mine, ALL OF THE TIME!! God bless you. -Trevor

  • A very good album....

    author: Don

Kim's voice, as usual, makes us fall in love with her all over again. Good music to relax to and well worth the price of the Album. Thanks Kim and band!

  • One of my favourite albums
author: John Gardiner ( United Kingdom)

Came across the album being available by accident from Kim's home page, having searched on the net for her page, listened to the samples and had to buy the album. Excellent speedy arrival and all I hoped for. Theres a couple of more rock style tracks which isnt so much my scene but all the rest are superb tracks to me and it keeps being played. More of the same please Kim !!

  • We loved this new CD!
    author: Mike Huffer

It's rare to put on a new CD and absolutely love each and every song, but that's how we felt after the first listen. And it gets better each time we turn it on. It is now one of our very favorites, and it's so great to have a new CD by a longtime favorite singer of ours!

  • More Kim Finally

  • Why so long, Kim?!
    author: Bill K Tampa, Florida

Simply, nectar for my ear drums. I can't find words to describe perfection... her music and voice is perfection, and once again, proves it on this CD. I hope another is coming real soon.

  • If you're looking at this page, buy this album!
    author: Geoff

I can't really add anything that hasn't already been said in the other reviews. This is an outstanding album and such a welcome comeback. I hope we don't have to wait another 10+ years for more from Kim.

  • Great music from an old friend!
    author: Donald King

It is great to hear the wonderful Kim Carnes again! Her songs are strong and her voice is in perfect shape in this, her first album in ten years. Listen particularly to track 3, "Where Is The Boy": it has the catchiest melody she's sung in years. A terrific return!

  • Aaaaaoooohhhh!!!
    author: Adam Book

I have been a fan of Kim's since the age of 14 in 1980 when she cracked the top 5 with Kenny Rogers and "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" and feel that this CD is by far her best. She has really settled into a groove that fits her like one of the gloves she used to wear in the Mistaken Identity album videos. My favorite track on the CD is "Runaway"... I have been haunted by lines in it like "Oh I'd go drivin' down a two-lane highway chasin' wild trains, and all this baggage in the rear view mirror would slowly fall away." Combined with the sad yet sweetly reassuring sounds of violin, viola, and cello, it is hard to resist the power of that song. Kim rocks out on some of the tracks and hasn't lost her edge, either lyrically or musically. I've always been impressed with her lyric writing and this CD doesn't disappoint. She seems to be struggling in these songs with some of the challenges that life presents as one matures, yet there is an overall triumphant tone that leaves the listener with hope. You get the feeling that she can rise above it all, and have a little fun in the process. Overall the CD is a very satisfying listen from beginning to end and I highly recommend it. I sincerely hope this will mark the beginning of a new era for Kim. I know that I speak for many of Kim's fans when I say that I'm "still warmed by the thrill" of her music. Thanks Kim for the music.

  • I play it repeatedly,I may have to buy a second one.
    author: David Reyna Murfreesboro,TN

It is a refreshing CD. Not country or POP, but in the middle. I have not been a big fan of Ms Carnes, but I have really enjoyed this CD. This album Chasing Wild Trains I believe will appeal to a wide genre of music lovers. From now on I will keep my eyes and ears open for more.

  • At the top
    author: Philippe Le Gall

This is not only Kim Carnes’s best album, this is also one of the best albums of the recent years. All her assets fully spread here. There is an incredible alchemy at work –good songs, musicians, this so typical and powerful voice, and a country-rock style that fits her incredibly well. “Goodnight angel” is one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard (with Marianne Faithfull’s “Ballad of Lucy Jordan”, I confess). Full of poetry and strength and grace. Kim Carnes is really at the top and this album shows she’s an exceptional artist. Thanks for this gift, Ms. Carnes [and sorry for the bad English]

  • I just died and went to heaven!!!
    author: Dale

I cannot believe I did not know about this gem sooner! It's been sooooooooooo long since Kim released a full CD of new classics and this was more than worth the wait. Honest to god...from the moment her voice comes on in "One Beat At A Time" it's like opening the door and seeing an old friend standing there. Even made me tear up a couple of time just to hear her again. Picking a fave would be impossible but "All About Time", "Goodnight Angel", "Still Warmed By The Thrill" immediately spring to mind. I LOVE this CD, I love Kim Carnes...WELCOME BACK!!!! All I can say is "MORE...MORE!!!!"

  • A great singer/songwriter makes a comeback
    author: Søren Andersen, Hvidovre, Denmark

Why it had to take some 16 years before Kim Carnes released another solo effort is beyond me. But here it is and thank God for that! She can still rock and she sure knows how to write a catchy tune. And she still has that wonderful and very recognizable voice that reminds you of her old work. An excellent album from start to finish.

  • Incredible! The Wait Was Too Long - But What An Album!
    author: Quentin Faust

Stripped Down Kim Carnes Is A Fabulous Singer/Songwriter. Gems on the CD are Runaway (one of her absolute best songs) and SkinBurn (Sexier than Bette Davis Eyes)

  • Welcome back Kim!
    author: Paul Ramlow

I have been a Kim Carnes fan for over 25 years and was thrilled to see her release a new CD. It's been long overdue!! Each track on Chasin' Wild Trains is a winner although Just To See You Smile and Goodnight Angel are my favorites. A must have CD for any Kim Carnes fan!

  • FABULOUS RETURN TO FORM
    author: CARL IN PERTHSHIRE SCOTLAND

Oh Wow! What a CD! I have always loved Kim and it's been a long wait. I'm one of those fans who has spent a fortune on ebay getting 'Checkin' Out The Ghosts' so this was indeed a thrill. Every track is a winner. Kim, please sent copies to BBC Radio Two in the UK! I emailed Davo. Radio Two will love it! Hopefully see you next year when I come over to the USA. Love Carl

  • Kim is back with the best album of her career (so far!)!
    author: Jody

Honestly, I had given up hope of Kim Carnes ever releasing another album, but I am thrilled to have been wrong! This new CD is by far the best album she has ever released! And she co-wrote the whole thing and produced it herself! Wonderful music! The album has a strong country-rock flavor to it, much like one would expect from Lucinda Williams, Juice Newton or Rosanne Cash, but Carnes crafts a sound all her own. Plus her voice is better than ever, with just the right amount of gruff, purity and vulnerability. I am crazy about every song on this CD, but I am especially fond of "If I Was An Angel"; I was familiar with the beautiful version by Matraca Berg, but Carnes' cover blows me away. There is so much depth and power in her voice. I recommend this CD to any Kim Carnes fan, and anyone who enjoys country-rock!

Kisses, kisses, kisses and kisses.

  • Wonderful comeback - Long, too long, overdue.
    author: Ian C UK

A brilliant return to top form by Kim Carnes. Much more like the old-style A+M albums, with top class lyrics and scores.Excellent production, but will it ever be heard on the airwaves? I am certain that here, in the UK, few will have access to Chasin' Wild Trains: I found it by sheer chance.I hope that there will be sufficient interest to generate re-release of the brilliant Lighthouse. In the meantime Chasin' Wild Trains is being played constantly. Fantastic Kim - a winner!

  • author: guillaume Vincendeau

Un superbe album! I've waited a long time for a new kim carnes. So i was delighted when i saw it on the net.It is delicate, energic with sensitive lyrics and always this great voice.I'd like now that a company make a reissue on cd of sailin. I've never heard it and i'm quite curious. Thanks to kim Carnes for new music ; i hope there will be many others

  • A Welcome Return From a Timeless Artist!
author: Keith Pells (Fort Myers, FL)

It's been a long time since her last studio album and "Chasin' Wild Trains" finds Kim returning to her soulful, country roots which makes a great followup to "View From The House". Her voice is still just remarkable and songwriting skills are even better than before. Life had been very good for Kim and that feeling shines through this album. "Lucid Dreams" is simply haunting. She truly hits the mark when she's writing a haunting melody and this track is a bullseye! The album is cohesive and eloquent. Simply masterful! A welcome and LONG over due return to form! NOW IF WE COULD ONLY GET THE WONDERFUL "LIGHTHOUSE" ALBUM REMASTERED AND RE-RELEASED!!!! (really...I'm begging!)

  • Worth the wait
    author: Jeffrey Kalfut

This cd is so incredible that I have listened to it repeatedly. It has not left my cd player. Kim's voice is at the best it has ever been and I would like to thank her for such an exceptional cd. The standout songs for me (so hard to choose) include One beat at a time, Where is the boy?, Lucid dreams, You made my skin burn, and my personal favorite, Runaway (what a beautiful and poetic song, my hat's off to you Kim). If you are a fan of Kim Carnes, you must have this cd. Enough said.

  • Great come back in top form!
author: Jorge Rodriguez, Ft Lauderdale, Florida

I just recently found by browsing the web, that one of my favorite singer-songwriters released a new CD: Kim Carnes, of course. I was elated to say the least finding out the great news and inmediately ordered the CD. It's a stunning come back for Miss Carnes, this is an absolutely beautiful album. I wish that it gets the attention that deserves. Best of luck to Kim with her new album and she should feel very proud of herself. There are people out there that really appreciate her big talents.

I was so excited to see that Kim came out with her first new CD of new material in so many years. With that comes high expectation. She has met EVERY expectation of mine. My choice of singles would be: 1. Just To See You Smile 2. All About Time 3. Lucid Dreams 4. Stepped Right In It..... I can even see possible "Mixes" of Runaway. Kim, THANK YOU for coming back!!! • STILL WARMED BY THE THRILL!
    author: MARLENE CHANDLER

What a surprise. A new Kim Carnes album! I cannot tell you how much I have longed for that voice to return. Kim's voice makes my heart ache and these songs are superb. The imagery of the lyrics and wonderful music tell stories like the best books. Production and musicians are all first class and her voice is timeless and haunting. Favorites? Every day I have a favorite track and then another floats into my head as I drive. Kim, your fans have missed you. Please don't keep us asking "Where Is The Girl?"

  • All that I expected and then some
    author: Rick Tanguis

Simply put it is rare that I listen to a new release through its entire play, this is one of those exceptions that held me spellbound.

  • Superb album, great voice, great melodies
    author: Dimelot

This album is fantastic! Her voice sounds great and I missed her so much. It is a great pleasure to hear her again. Listen to the album and you will see what is a real artist. She has nothing to prove, her career of 33 years (my age!) is amazing and this album sounds better than others. The first time I turned the radio on, I heard the single Voyeur, in 1982. It was my first record and I love her music since then. The style of this album fits her voice very well. I can't wait for 10 years more to listen again some brand new stuff!!! I want more! Thanks so much Kim for this wonderful album!!

  • Still Kim
    author: William Schultz

Great to have new music From Kim! The songs are thoughtful and well written. I perfered the singer songwriter Kim *A*M lps and "St Vincent" to the more rock and roll diva that happened in the 80's and this cd is back to the Kim I first loved. Great Cd

  • Still Amazing
    author: Rick Devine

Artist with mainstream success nearly twenty years ago puts out an album on their own label and even the most hardcore fan has to be a little apprehensive. But Chasin' Wild Trains would easily dispel any fears that anyone who still associates "Bette Davis Eyes" and Kim Carnes might have. Her distinctive vocal style still matches the incredible skill of her songwriting! This is a great CD!!!!

  • I CAN'T WAIT TO START HAVING LUCID DREAMS LIKE KIM CARNES!
    author: ROBERTA DILLON

KIM CARNES SHOULD NOT BE A NAME FROM THE PAST. MUSIC TODAY SHOULDN'T BE CRAP RAP, AND SICKENINGLY SWEET SYRUP PAP. THAT SAID THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A CD WITH EVERY SONG ON IT BEYOND WORTH THE PRICE OF THE CD. KIM IS WRITING WITH OTHER PEOPLE HERE BUT EVERY SONG SOUNDS LIKE ONE PERSON WROTE THE LYRICS.Sorry I'm shouting but It seems that this cd deserves capitol letters. It makes me think of great songs from her other records, the real standouts. I don't skip anything in this cd, which is very unusual. I don't know what my favorite song is...maybe ONE BEAT AT A TIME, OR LUCID DREAMS, or DELANO HOTEL...where I can see the neon coming through those blowing curtains she talks about... Kim you blew me away and I'm hard to impress, even though i am only 16. I can't wait to start having lucid dreams, I can only hope one of them is as good as any one of yours! You're so too cool. Thank you for Wild Trains. One day I'll go chasing them Roberta

Well produced, written and recorded this is a must-own CD for all Kim Carnes fans of past present and future. Well done!

  • KIM RULES
author: Guilherme M. Correa (from Rio, Brazil)

This is her first album since 1991’s Checkin’ Out The Ghosts (released only in Japan). This is not an album of standarts or covers of classic rock (what I would call as an “easy fast selling formula”). Kim worked very hard. She produced or co-produced all tracks. She wrote or co-wrote all songs too. This is an independent album made by an independent woman. There’s no external interference on her new work. She chose the repertoire, the musicians, the best way to sing, the pictures of art work, etc. She also plays keyboard in “Lucid Dreams” and “Runaway.” The 12 new tracks show she’s lost nothing of her vocal power or range. Kim’s voice is quite a bit more raspy, like you hear on her 90’s recordings (“Above The Waterline” – the Baywatch theme, “Love Hurts,” “Bad Bad Lerow Brown,” for exemple). “Chasin Wild Trains” is a mature album, a strong record. Kim pens and performs her songs with great beauty and feeling. The band plays admirably! Some tracks are no surprise for Kim’s fans. She has played live some tunes as “If I Was An Angel” (recorded by Matraca Berg in her 1997’ album), “All About Time,” “One Beat At A Time” and “Stepped Right In It’. As the public tasted and approved these tracks, Kim recorded them. All tracks talk about love. Second Kim, “love ain’t a matter of exact science / can’t predict where it’s goin’” (from “Stepped Right In It” lyrics). So this explains her several kinds of mood during the 12 songs. Every song tells a love story. Kim wrote about a woman who is completely confused in “You Make My Skin Burn” after spending a night on room 322 at Delano Hotel. Must be a case of mistaken identity. Anyway, she would find the right person on the next song: “Still Warmed By The Thrill”! My favorite track is “Goodnight Angel.” I’ve played over and over again. It’s a pretty ballad. I love Kim spelling “Caroline SSSSSSSSSSSSun”. The instrumental is killer! Billy Panda and Tom Bukovack are my guitar heroes! Tim Lauer is one of the best keyboard players of all time. This song could be a theme of some brazilian soup opera. It would be a smash hit. Another song I play over and over again is “Just To See You Smile”. Perfect pop! I loved the lyrics. It’s my song! Kim also sings hard rock in “You Made My Skin Burn”. Craig Crampf (from early Kim’s band) plays drummer on both songs. Great job! The “cult” track is “Runaway”. It sounds like a soundtrack. The musicians must be played very and very hard. I loved it! And Kim plays keyboard on this tune! I am so proud Kim plays soooo good! I am also so proud with her singing and songwriting talent. I hope Kim doesn’t stop the recording career. She has enough stuff for more albums. I hope she includes “We Can Turn This Love Around” (duet with Greg Barnhill) and “You Don’t Love Me Anymore” on her next album.

Kim Carnes continues her unbroken trend of supplying our world with the wonderful gift of her excellent and very satisfying art. Her music, though often seemingly (and with no small amount of frustration) overlooked by "the industry", is nothing less than buried treasure that would bring a deeper level of quality and richness to our radio waves if only radio would discover and listen. Kim's Chasin' Wild Trains brings a depth of color, life and heart that few artists of our day seem able to muster and produce. Once again she bares her soul and exposes her diverse and vastly underrated talent in another collection of songs that will touch you, stir you and leave you satisfied and ever longing for more. Kim, please don't ever stop presenting us with the gift of your music and your voice for we will never stop listening and will always be looking forward with great anticipation to the next time when we can be "Still Warmed By The Thrill" of your songs.

  • Absolutely Amazing!!!!

Chasin' Wild Trains merits well-deserved recognition as a contemporary entry in the discography of the American roots music tradition. Kim Carnes' unique vocal timbre beautifully conveys soulful, simple songs in elegant intimacy. The rich blend of country, soul, blues, folk, and pop is not readily apparent on first hearing but listeners will soon discover the expansive diversity of this gifted songwriter's musical roots. Her voice, somewhat muted and restrained in power, nevertheless conveys an emotionally powerful spirit that comes with musical maturity. Free from the confines of genre, packaging, and market-driven spontaneity, Carnes invites the listener into an intimate musical dialogue that happens to include a stellar array of guest performers. It’s no mere coincidence that Carnes titled this newest collection of a dozen songs with a railroad metaphor. For as long as there has been a railroad, musicians from the folk, country, rock, and blues genres have deliberately and subconsciously used trains to communicate everything from heartbreak to the hope of love and to spiritual Renaissance. True railfans go even further “chasing” trains for long distances to get that right photograph or glimpse. In much the same way, Carnes is “chasing” her real musical passion in this album, songs unencumbered by the often un-musical corporate and marketing demands of the recording industry. In many respects, we see a musically honest and emotionally engaged artist here whom bridges her old style quite seamlessly with a well-nuanced approach captured in heartfelt lyrics and cleanly textured instrumentals. In “Just To See You Smile,” Carnes is reminiscent of earlier lyrics with albums released under A & M records. The song is a whimsical memory of previous loves, “giddy” but reservedly so in thought and delivery. A genuinely fun and radio-friendly cut, the song encapsulates the classic theme of love and loss. Carnes comfortably returns to a harder sound, reminiscent of her Voyeur, album in “You Make My Skin Burn.” Lustful and occasionally euphoric, the song will please classic Carnes fan and gently surprise newcomers. Also intermixed among the soulful ballads is “Stepped Right in It,” another fun, upbeat gem with a distinct country-rock flavor that suits the classic rasp of Carnes’ voice. However, her musical maturity blooms fully in “Still Warmed by the Thrill,” an enduring ballad about the durability of love. Less whimsical, more contemplative, Carnes is truly at home with the music and lyrics. Just as exemplary is “If I Was an Angel,” a profound, moody ballad made popular originally by Matraca Berg. Carnes drives the melodic line with her familiar vocal strength but controls the texture which allows the listener to fully appreciate the song’s compelling message.

  • a long-awaited triumph for kim carnes!

Kim hasn't done an album in 10 years, and fans have been long waiting. The wait was worth it! different from all of her previous albums, this one is full of soul, and her voice is at its aching best. she truly seems to get better and better with time. the "Bette Davis Eyes" growler is back and better than ever. "Lucid Dreams" and "Runaway" are highlights here. the "Kim Fan" out there won't be disappionted!

An absolute Americana masterpiece with a classic, "seen a little more than my share" slant. Filling up the moment with raw but precious emotion, Kim's strained but fully-present voice seals the deal on these well cared-for tracks. With echoes of Bonnie Raitt, Tom Petty and Steve Earle, her woody roots in the thick soil of 80s Americana sets a foundation for some of the beefiest, most substantial Americana rock to grace audiences yet. Featuring guest artists Angelo (Kings of Leon), Kim Richey, Matraca Berg, Al Anderson (NRBQ), Chuck Prophet, Richard Bennett, (Dire Straits, Steve Earle), and Jeff Hanna (Dirt Band) there's an abundant ingenuity pulsing through the veins of every vibrant track. Not to be missed.
