Kimberly Holloway

Kimberly has been wowing audiences with her vocal abilities since the age of three. Some say she was born with a microphone in her hand. This native of Atlanta, Georgia gained her interest in music listening to many of the Soul, Funk, and Jazz classics in her older siblings' collections. Since then she has honed her skills playing instruments and lending her vocal and instrumental talents to many of the musical organizations on the campus of Florida A&M University. These include the Infamous Marching "100", Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble, Clarinet Choir, Concert Choir and Jazz Band. This is where her love for Jazz & Classical music manifested itself. As a student, Kimberly performed for many conferences, festivals, and venues across the country and abroad. Upon graduating from FAMU, Kimberly, then moved to the Atlanta area where she established herself as a performer within the soul stirring musical community continuing to captivate audiences with her unique style and enigmatic presence. The vocal nuances this earthy sister brings to music are reminiscent of her greatest soul influences, imbued with a hint of Jazz. Although this musician, songwriter, and vocal arranger loves recording, she absolutely lives for performing and connecting with her audience. When you experience one of her shows, you may catch her playing percussion, dancing or battling her musicians vocally on the microphone. The vocal arrangements that come to life through her background will entice you. She lives in a world of harmony, which sets her apart from most of the vocalists this day and age. Kimberly recently moved to the Los Angeles area to begin a new chapter of her musical career. You will not want to miss this soulful vocalist.

    Kimberly Holloway, a native of Atlanta, has an intense, yet gentle love for Soul, Funk, Jazz and Classical music as evidenced by her impressive self-titled debut album. Released independently in 2004 (Soulmate Records), the album is a tight collection of funky and soulful tracks amidst jazzy and lush ballads. The album opens with "African Queen" (Intro) where Holloway quietly but firmly asks: "Do you want me, do you need me / Brother I'm your African Queen". This crisp and quick opener is the perfect introduction to Kimberly Holloway, the artist. She effortlessly paints her feelings throughout the album in a variety of hues, all in the interest of expressing her soul's voice. She contemplates the current state of the world and how to influence change in songs like "Unity" and "Superstar." Her voice shines within the jazzy hush of the reverent "You Are My Muse" and the multi-genre sound of "Music (Got Me High)," where she sings, "Your rhythm's got me high, so high I can touch the sky". Holloway freely channels her romantic side on other songs like "You Are" where she sings with such passion, "you are the blood I bleed". While "Hold Me" allows the singer (and her piano) to gently nudge her lover to "hold me and kiss me". The track entitled "Walls" is reminiscent of the honey-sweet sound of the late Minnie Riperton, whereas the funk and irresistible groove of "Slow Down" echoes the genius of Stevie Wonder. Reviews within the United States praise the singer for her power-house performances. For those who have yet to see Holloway perform live, this album, undoubtedly her first of many, serves as a preview of what to expect. Kimberly Holloway is the type of artist the music industry needs to pay attention to. Undoubtedly, artists in a similar vein could help spur some positive change and rejuvenate the business.

    It's very rare that I come across such a dynamic artist. Kimberly's music reminds me of some of the greatest and innovative musical artists of old. Lyrics are key, and there is so much wisdom in her words. I am very picky too so that says a lot. I hope to hear alot more from her because she is great. I'm sure she is working on something beautiful and I can't wait to hear it!

    I had the pleasure of seeing Kimberly perform live a few weeks ago and she was wonderful. She involved the crowd and made everyone feel at home. She is definitely worth her weight in gold. I can now see why there is so much hype surrounding this new artist. The album is slammin', but to witness her show live is to witness poetry in motion. In my opinion, Kimberly will reach the stars and surpass them. SHE IS A CLASSIC!

    I don't understand how some mediocre artists get all of the lime-light and artists like this aren't even heard of! I was browsing on mypsace and ran into this brilliant artist. Her voice stood out and I wanted to know more about her. I did a google on her and found all of this stuff written up about her. The crazy thing is, she isn't even signed! What is wrong people? Our society accepts artists that can barely hold a note, yet the good ones slip through the cracks. I love Kimberly's music and I know the world would too. Her music is outstanding.

    This week I met a beautiful singer songwriter that has such a solid lyrical style. Her tune, HOLD ME, is the fitting close to this rather involved week. It's a love song that allows the backing tones to do the caressing as she sings you into that perfect calm after a hard day's work. Equally at home in the lead and background, Kimberly is able to truly cast a sonic spell over her listeners, inside of any arrangement. Just go take a loooong listen to all of her tunes of which UNITY is truly a highlight and end the session with HOLD ME. She'll become an instant classic, I promise.

    I am so pleased to write my testimony on behalf of this lovely artist. Her music is wonderful. It's incredible to hear such delivery and production from an unsigned artist. You can tell she wasn't playing any games and taking no prisoners when she went into the studio. She reminds me of some of my favorite artists from the early days, yet she has her own sound. Her lyrics are insightful and encouraging. I've had the pleasure of seeing this artist perform on 2 occasions since the release of this album and believe me, her energy is even better live. Her show blew me away. She is beautiful, strong, entertaining, and delightfully witty. Her band is incredible! She rolls with a 10 piece band equipped with horns and all.     Atlanta is really cookin! Kimberley has an exceptionally clear voice, highlighted by the brilliant production with great definition of her voice and the live instruments. 'Unity' is a strong organic dancer with positive lyrics feat trumpeter Russell Gunn (also on other tracks), 'Music (got me high)' is a more up-tempo groove, 'There's Something About You' a nice jazzy mid-tempo floater, but the stand out is the unusual , appropriately titled (for her image) 'African Queen' a real foot tapper featuring some great percussion and flute. With good songs and strong lyrics throughout this is well worth checking out.

From the heavy latin flava of Music (Got me High) to the Amel Larrieux driven Unity it is easy to see why this might be one of the best slept on Cd's of the upcoming year. Kim's style reminds me of the great Randy Crawford, Jean Carne, and Angela Bofil in how her voice adapts to the style of music that she is relating to. She takes you on a mystical journey above the clouds of mental elivation and into the vast sea of personal expression. Slow Down, this mello funky fly groove drives you to bob your head to Lil Kim's classic Crush on You bass line. Kim's sultry voice makes this cut a must on your play list.
