notes

Brian Kilcourse has been part of the San Francisco music scene since the early 70's, when he was one-third of the legendary "power trio" MISTRESS, featuring guitarist Greg Douglass (later of Steve Miller and Greg Kihn fame). In 1995, the German record label TAXIM released Mistress' album, FREEFLYTE, and as a result of the positive feedback, Brian was encouraged to start recording again as a solo artist. MEGATON MELODIES is a collection of the best of Brian's work from 1997-2002. All songs are written and performed by Brian, recorded at RED HEN Studios in his home town of Walnut Creek, California.

BRIAN KILCOURSE Megaton Melodies (CD)(Own Release)

And now a record from someone who doesn't believe in all hype of modern rock 'n roll simply as he seen it all! Brian Kilcourse used to play twenty years ago in the rock'n roll circuit. Nothing was made on record but along with his band Slim Chance And The Questionnaires, Brian saw all the bars and pubs in Northern California while performing his music there, but now the time was ripe to get his stuff onto cd and that's this cd here. Brian poses in Marilyn Monroe-style (you know the famous painting from Warhol) on the sleeve but the man is sober enough to let all signs of rockdom pass him by as this is a pure honest rock album, rock that is a bit reminiscent of AOR-artists like Chris Rea or even Dire Straits. "Megaton Melodies" is the kind of record that never will be noted as one of the biggest things, it's just something honest...something from the heart, and you know as good as I do what does mean these days....

  • Hook, line and sinker - Catch this one.

Don't pass this CD up. From start to finish, it is filled with outstanding tracks - not a stinker in the bunch. The guitar and vocal texturing is extremely impressive. It kicks off with the power-pop laced Movie of Our Lives. My personal favorite is The Time We Need. Don't miss the Robert Palmer-like Coffee & Your Kiss and the great double-punch ending - In Outro and Short 'n' Sweet. A must have for any collection. Pass it on to your friends.

  • A very Listenable, pleasant and enjoyable CD

I first became aware of Brian's music with the Greg Douglass & Mistress CD "Free Flyte". With this new release Brian is doing what Paul McCartney did with his first solo album - playing all the instruments himself and doing a great job of writing original catchy songs and memorable music. Movies Of Our Life, Half Remembered Dream, Moved To Murder and Down The Tubes are all great rock songs. Although he uses a drum machine it still sounds really good. This is a good CD and a must have if you like good songs and pretty ballads. Reminds me a little of early James Taylor and America in some places but is all 100% Brian. Buy this CD - you will not be diappointed!

  • I expected nothing less!

I've heard Brian's music from the early days and always enjoyed the lyics and music. I've grown up with "Kilcourse' music and now am happy to have a clean, pure CD of music I've heard for years. It really does "Take Me Back"!

  • Fine Album
    author: Billy Nail

He may not be young and hungry like he was in Mistress. But who cares !!! Brian has done a great job of displaying what a fine songwriter and talented musician he is. You have to really give this album credit where it's due. In a day of big sounds on big budgets. Brian does a simple but very sweet recording here. Showing that in the end, it's the songs that really matter. Thanks for the great music !!!!

  • Sweet jazz guitar

"Is It Me" is by itself well worth the album price. That fat, sooo sweet jazz guitar is also clean and perfectly understated.

  • Excellent As Always!!!

Just another great CD from my dad Slim. This CD shows how much dedication he put into it!!

  • A real sleeper! Moving lyrics & music. Interesting variety. Worth owning!
    author: Grace Gentry

You will love "Coffee & Your Kiss"; then buy this CD to listen to it and the other thought-provoking and moving - and sometimes funny - lyrics and music on it. The variety of subjects and styles, plus the skill with which the artist executes them, will entertain you for hours (and leave a few tunes playing themselves in your head).

  • NICE!

Pleasant Music, Thought Provoking and Enjoyable Lyrics, Overall - Just GREAT!
