Shot on Digital video, super 8 and 16mm film, this film offers a rather unconventional documentary format.In seven waves, the audience is taken on a journey of dancing, timelapse cinematography, and experimental electronic music (ABA Structure). Integrated with this visual and musical collage, unique perspectives on Native American culture and Rave Culture are voiced through interviews of people from different cultural and generational backgrounds.

author: dub gnosticFilms that view electronic music culture through the lens of established artists (Modulations is the first that comes to mind) have a tendency to disappoint, as it is impossible to represent the diversity of electronic music's subgenres (which are perpetually evolving) and the varying streams of specific cultural influences found within each of these respective genres. Furthermore, while important figures they may be, the artists which are generally presented in these films constitute a small fraction of the industry, let alone what may ambiguously be termed the electronic music "scene." Rather than focus on the industry aspects, Moment Utopia pursues the philosophical and cultural themes of the 1990's North American rave scene through active participants who acted as cultural engineers of sorts in the LA and Toronto subcultures. Also thrown into the mix are First Nations' insights on the cultural and spiritual aspects of dance, and a style of cinematography not unlike Ron Fricke (Koyaanisqatsi/ Baraka) which (whether intentionally or inspirationally it does not matter) places the film's subject matter within a greater spectrum of historical and philosophical concern. Moment Utopia will transcend the latter nineties attempts to document electronic music culture because it was made prior to the consolidation of the music industry as a hegemonic force, and sheds light on the rave phenomenon's commonalities with similar cycles of spiritual revival in human history. Whereas the other films stand as useful secondary sources reflecting back from the elite perspectives of the agents of electronic music culture who found material success, Williams' work was produced within the heart of a thriving DIY underground music culture and captures the exploratory creativity of an age when the dividing line between artist and audience had yet to form. As such, this is an essential primary source for anyone with an interest in understanding the phenomenon of electronic music culture and how it contributed to the processes of change within mainstream culture which are still emerging from that era.
