About Floating Galaxy
There is something especially rich and evocative about slowly moving music. The calm, relaxing absence of beat drive and rapidly changing musical events permit greater exploration of richer harmonies and evolving timbre changes and tone colors while allowing time for these materials to play on the mind and soul. As a composer, I’ve always admired visual artists for their independent control over their art. The need not rely, as do musicians, on performers to bring their work to life. Today, a composer has a veritable palette of electronic sounds to mix and “mood-ulate” all by oneself, finally able to create like the painters nad sculptors.
The new music on this album represents many specical hours of gazing at night skies for inspiration. I hope you enjoy this music and that it may bring you many hours of relaxation and joy. Imagine yourself in space observing our floating galaxy.
Floating Galaxy
A scientist acquaintance showed me some telescopic color slides of outer space — striking shots of orbiting phenomena, quasars, planets and galaxies represented by a wide spectrum of shapes and colors. I could “see” (and “hear”) them move, slowly drifting, floating, interacting.
Waterscape
My wife is a French hornist, and I love the sound of horn. So I created this floating, shimmering surface over which the horn sound can soar.
Quietude No. 3
This piecce began life as a meditative organ work. But I thought it was equally meditative when “reorchestrated” with (non-organ) electronic sounds of a soothing nature.
Night Sea Freighter
Imagine that you are cruising across the sea in a cargo vessel. It’s night time and your day’s work is done. You’re relaxing on the deck surrounded by calm ocean and a clear, star-filled night sky. You gaze at the stars while you hear the ship’s engine churning in the background.
Shimmering Starlights
This piece was inspired by one of my Colorado mountain camping trips. I was lying on the ground, watching the stars work their flickering magic.
Aurora Borealis: A Green Arc Appears
In the cold north where the northern lights are see, they sometimes begin with the appearance of a slowly rising green glow before evolving into moving shapes that paint the night sky.
Imagination Soundscape
Let this gently undulating harmony and drifting melody suggest your own favorite scenes.
Utah Sunset
Utah is one of my favorite places. The sunsets are extraordinarily color-rich as they play on the passing clouds, embuing them with striking oranges, lavenders, pinks, reds and yellows in varying shades. The clouds move slowly across the sky, morphing into ever changing patterns of shapes and colors. One of those sunsets was so compelling, I had to stop my car on the road side and just watch as the sun darkened to a rich red-orange before sinking beneath the horizon. I tried to capture that vision in sound, even to the fluttering flock of birds that briefly appeared and flew across the sun.
Six Major Sevens
This little one minute piece was inspired by a purely musical idea. It’s a flow of just six pretty chords surrounded by color.
Tom’s Delay
Another short piece. My friend Tom introduced me to his sound experiments using a sound processing device called digital delay which creates interesting echo effects. So I wrote this piece with those delays as the primary element to see how cool sounding and interesting they could be.
