(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

Smart, infectious acoustic songwriting, drawing on influences of Lucinda Williams and Ryan Adams. The Village Voice raves... 'Her style invokes a cross between Willie Nelson and John Prine, and you don't get any better than that.'

notes

Keating's music is songwriting at its purest.

Somewhere along the way, between her beginnings in Boston, her travels on the road and her eventual landing in New York City, she developed a sound -- passionate music and intimate songs -- tough and tender. The Village Voice raves, " Keating is a wise mix of Lucinda Williams songwriting, Gillian Welch guitar and a vocal all her own...one of those singer-songwriters that lets her music do the talking. Her style invokes a cross between Willie Nelson and John Prine and you don't get any better than that."

You don't get any better than that.

Keating doesn't dance around issues or waste time wondering -- she takes the wheel. No frills or posturing -- her sultry voice cuts straight to the heart. Childhood, relationships, battles won and battles lost. There is an honesty here, sometimes sad but always brave that lets you know this woman travels roads not taken and goes the distance. Through her journeys, she writes songs that take us places well worth visiting.

Having grown up in Boston and learned to play guitar at age 13, Keating honed her craft at "The Underground" club in Providence, Rhode Island. An activist and musician, she moved to New York City in 1992 playing music at night and advocating for civil liberties and reproductive rights causes during the day.

Keating's first album, "The High Dive" got airplay on more than 100 radio stations in the U.S., Canada, Belgium and England, while earning critical praise from The Village Voice, Discovering Artists.com, CD Baby, and more. Southpaw (one of New York's hottest music clubs) calls her
"A great female talent in New York who deserves closer attention."

Annie Keating's new album, "Take the Wheel," produced by Chris Tarrow (GrooveLily and Goodbye Girl Friday) takes her talents to a new level. The songs blend acoustic and electric sounds with a warmth and quality that seems too good for a self-released CD.

"Take the Wheel" takes you back. You want to slip it out of a jacket, place it on a turntable, drop the needle and hear that first crackle. And then Annie Keating's voice and her guitar -- songs that come from her heart - make you feel your own pounding in your chest.

Isn't that what great music is all about?

  • Heartfelt music, reminds me of early Emmy Lou or Dylan

Songs that go right to the heart and make you want to hear more. Nice, honest and emotional lyrics make it easy to imagine her point of view. The mandolin, piano, simple banjo and backup harmonies adds a chilling effect on the body and soul...

  • Great new singer/songwriter

I've seen Annie Keating play live several times in New York and I think this CD really captures the intimate feel of her performances. Her lyrics and singing style are heartfelt, she writes great melodies, and the band does a good job of providing a solid pulse behind her, without overplaying. I'm a big fan of people like John Prine and Patti Griffin and Annie Keating is following in that tradition of writing and singing songs that feel like they actually mean something to the artist. For me, it's the only music I can connect to and it can be hard to find these days. The High Dive is that type of album and I'm looking forward to hearing more from Annie Keating.

  • Keating rocks! Inspiring music and heartfelt lyrics. An awesome new performer.

Artists like this do not come around very often; Keating's music resonates with passion and pulse and her lyrics are simply wonderful. I have listened to this over and over and it grows on me every time. A winner!!!!!

  • I can't get this disc off my player!

Yep, I keep doin' The High Dive. This recording is more like a refreshing lake swim and a natural hotspring soak than a plunge off a platform. Each tune throws different waves but the current is constant -- Keating writes songs that catch the foot, engage the brain, and summon the listener to listen and feel. Fine guitar and mandolin licks, rockin' keyboards, and solid lowline drum and bass throughout, but the story here is in the songs, folks. Check out the bittersweet loveliness of the title track, the haunting swells of Riverboat, the hopeful groove of Wildcard, or the twangy personal journey of Weekend Getaway. My favorite cut is Four Leaf Clover . . . I think! Point is, The High Dive is at the same time simple and complex, and Keating's style is similarily distinctive and lush. Sometimes rockabilly, sometimes hushed with melodic storytelling, this artist and this album gets better and better with every listen. I'm glad that a very good pal turned me on to it, and I'm writing in the hopes that more music lovers will check it out. I bet it lingers in your players, too.

Annie Keating's songs marinate in the senses, drawing all the pleasure and pain of love from the smells and sights and tastes of a country afternoon. Her characters are wary idealists, aiming for the fullest, kindest, most enchanted lives possible in a world where hope and connection are hard to maintain. Sometimes her melodies recall the tunes of troubadours and carnivals, picking and trilling their way around the next bend in the road to unexpected places. Other times, a rocking rhythm drives her soulful voice to a shout, a plea, a reckoning with the eternal nature of longing. These are songs for lovers and dreamers who are jaded enough to see life for what it is--and brave enough to try to make it more like what they dreamed.

  • Wonderful lyrics and upbeat tunes

The High Dive is a treat. Keating is a great storyteller. The lyrics are very compelling. Like all good CD's this one unfolds with each listening. The tunes are catchy and upbeat and I find myself humming them long after the stereo is off.

  • As moving as Iris DeMent or Eva Cassidy.

The music I listen to influences my painting. Annie Keating's lyrics had the same positive effect as Iris DeMent's and Eva Cassidy's.
