notes

The Kal Bergendahl Project (KBP) is a group of several diverse and talented musicians. Founded in the fall of 2005, the KBP steps into the worlds of vocal R&B, pop, and smooth jazz, creating a unique and interesting blend of music that attracts a wide audience. The group’s sounds are reminiscent of David Sanborn and Kirk Whalum on the jazz side and Norah Jones and Joss Stone on the pop side.

Melodic variety is a key element of the KBP’s style, which features pop and soul vocal melodies incorporated with instrumental melodies led by the saxophone, trumpet, piano, and bass. This variety creates an intriguing musical texture that can be led by any voice in the band.

The group’s front man, Kal Bergendahl, previously founded the W.A.M.I.-nominated smooth jazz group Emerge, which received radio airplay and toured the Midwest, performing at large venues such as Alive Fest in Ohio. Having already established himself as a talented performer and composer, Kal has now embarked on this new project, venturing to combine smooth, edgy jazz with soulful vocals. The KBP gives him the opportunity to take the next step in his playing. “I wanted to have a group which has the ability to have any member musically or vocally lead,” he explains. “Even though I am the leader I pass around the melodies to everyone. My purpose is to bring two audiences together, the jazz and pop audience and expose them to the music they may not be as familiar with.”
