Katy Wehr's debut americana folk/rock album is all about the voice, all about the guitars and strings, all about the stories, the heartache and making peace.

notes

Music can sometimes fixate on either pain or easy answers but The Smell of Rain by Katy Wehr explores the space between those two extremes, giving voice to genuine struggle and exploring the rocky path toward resolution.

With strong, clear vocals and an Americana sound that leans now toward folk, now toward alt-country, Katy Wehr uses sparse lyrics and natural imagery to tell stories about loneliness, fear, forgiveness and the stirrings of hope.

Songs from The Smell of Rain have recently been featured on BBC Northern Ireland's Rhythm and Soul, The Hugh Hewitt Show, Wisconsin Public Radio's Simply Folk, Northwest Public Radio's Inland Folk, North Carolina Public Radio's Back Porch Music and Minnesota Public Radio- The Current's Morning Show.

All Songs are also available individually through ITunes, Rhapsody, MSN Music, BuyMusic, MusicNet, Napster, MP3tunes and Yahoo Music Match.

  • Well written, well performed.
    author: Dan Magnuson

I first heard Katie when she sang track 4 at our church. I was sitting up straight by the second line and ready to buy the CD by the end of the song. The album repays many listenings. My favorite (a fabulously written song!) is Trouble and Sorrrow. There are several strong songs on this album. And, of course, her voice is great.

  • Awesome - I bought four of your CD's

What a treat to hear and share such sweet music. I gave 4 of The Smell of Rain for Christmas presents...one to me :-)

  • Sounds Like...

Katy's got that Emmylou Harris and Joan Baez sound goin' ON!

  • Reminiscent of Judy Collins

It's a high compliment that a listener finds herself remembering the best of Judy Collins when Judy was at her best while listening to several cuts on this CD. Folk/Soul? Whatever it's called, it's sweet.

  • Soundtrack for the Journey
    author: Matt Malyon- Image Update

The Smell of Rain blends the sounds of traditional Americana and folk, East Canadian maritime music, and spirituals into a sound that is both meditative and exuberant. But The Smell of Rain is filled with words for loss and sorrow. The words nonetheless flow downward towards something larger and more hopeful. In both sorrow and hope, listeners will find here an accompanying soundtrack for similar travels.

  • Put this record on, and suddenly you're home.

When I listened to the record I was impressed, to say the least. Katy has built her songs on the firm foundation of folk, both lyrically and musically. She tells a good story and invites us in to her experience; we might even be changed as a result. The record seems to be fuelled by a deeper joy than mere happiness. And musically, this one's worth listening to on the headphones.

  • A Great Introduction to a New Genre
    author: Dan Ray

Katy is really good. Her songwriting is lyrically vibrant and deep with meaning. The arrangements and the backup musicians are excellent, in fact stunning at times. She's not afraid to take risks with her songs, employing bold transitions and even risky key changes at times, but they work. Combine those factors with an amazing voice that will lift your spirits, and you have in Smell of Rain a CD that you will want to listen to over and over again.

  • A beautiful balance of the earthy and the ethereal
    author: Ahna Phillips

With lyrics firmly anchored in a sense of place, The Smell of Rain gives the listener a lovely mental playground on which to swing from one solid image to another. Psalm-like in its honest grappling with the difficulties of life -- a friend dying of cancer, or the pain of a relationship ending -- yet never succumbing to self-indulgent despair. Whether or not the listener believes what Katy Wehr is singing, one is never in doubt that SHE does. The Smell of Rain ... delicious in itself, and a harbinger of more good things to come.
