notes

Take the passion of Alanis Morrissette, the virtuosity of Norah Jones, and the songwriting talent of Dave Matthews, and wrap them in a tiny power-packed bundle, and you've got New York's freshest new sound: Katy Pfaffl. NY sensation Katy Pfaffl (pronounced FAH-full) writes all her own music like the big acts mentioned above, but she also sings while playing the piano and guitar, and violin! With her special blend of folk rock, jazz, and world rhythms, this pint-sized powerhouse has developed a strong following that packs famous clubs such as The Bitter End and the Living Room in heart of Manhattan. You can't see Katy Pfaffl perform without quickly becoming a loyal fan and even a friend. "Musically, everyone wins." proclaims Maximum Ink Magazine. "...the Joni Mitchell of this millennium."

Katy Pfaffl, the multi-talented, multi-instrument playing chanteuse is back with "As She Stands." As she did on her self-titled first disc, she magically enchants you with her incredible vocal range and ability, in her solid performance, lovely arrangements and brilliant writing style. Better still, she has grown tremendously as an artist from that original CD, and it really shows here. Each of the ten songs she offers on this second album is a little gem, and collectively that becomes a remarkable string of jewels presented by a very talented performer. Examples: "Catch Me" is a song filled with longing, ache and tenderness. Poignantly lovely, lyrically evocative, it is the sort of track you hit the replay button on, time and time and time again! "Goodbye" has the sound of an authentic 1970s RNB classic tune! It's simply a kick ass performance. Turn this one up! "Beautiful" is exactly that. Scaled down sounds, simple and powerful images, and a real ride, it's a winner. The title track is knowing in its quiet contemplativeness. It's a gentle sweet confection, and it's clearly a heart-felt tribute to the singer's roots. And Katy's reinvention of the Lennon/McCartney classic "Blackbird" is worth the purchase price alone! Credit to her band, who all contribute greatly to the architecture of this sound sculpture: Justin Wallace who smacks incredible basslines, Sean Dixon and Sebastian Guerrero who make perfection with their percussive sounds, Scott Sharrard, who adds authenticity (and his amazing wa-wa pedal) to "Goodbye" and Scott Chasolen, who rocks the keyboards. If you want to hear the Next Big Thing without waiting for The Industry to figure out what that is, you only need to get a copy of "As She Stands."
