notes

At the heart of the contemporary Celtic revival dwells soul of Kate Price. A talented multi instrumentalist with a rich and beautiful voice, Kate continues to defy the very genre her early work helped define. Her music is as much a journey for her as for the listener.

Her repertoire blends cross cultural influences with her lyrical voice and her dynamic yet intimate sensibility. Noting this, one reviewer summed her up as “one part faery, one part gypsy”, and called her performance style “warm, elegant and intimate”.

The music industry, in it’s attempt to classify and categorize, has frequently compared Kate to Loreena McKennit, however this comparison does not really serve either of these talented women. While there are certainly similarities, the astute listener will quickly see that Kate’s music is quite distinctly her own vision.

Deep Hearts Core allowed Kate a fuller expression of her fire. With compositions that navigated between the Balkans, the British lsles, and Latin flavors, this recording is a passionate, playful and intimate portrait of Kate’s internal world. Co-Produced by Teja Bell, Deep Hearts Core exploded into the music scene and garnished international acclaim and distribution in 28 countries. It was from Deep Hearts Core that CBS chose a track to score a 1998 Olympic coverage documentary in Nagana Japan.

  • Wonderful! I love it!

Beautiful music! Kate Price does not disappoint to draw the listener into a lake where you go back once you've heard her several times. Thanks for your beautiful business mannerism too. It's refreshing than the normal clinical style marketing hard sell! Shelly

  • Love at first listen at the SoCal Renaissance Pleausure Faire
    author: Christine

I bought this to replace my original copy. I couldn't find it, and didn't waste time looking for it. I just bought a new one! The magical blending of instruments is awe-inspiring, from the Hammer Dulcimer to the Sitar, from the Cittern to the Hurdy Gurdy. I first heard The Journey On at the Socal Ren Faire just months after my mother died. I cried when I heard it. It went right into my soul. And I loved it. Now when I hear it I smile. The last line--In my mother's arms I will rest--is a gift to anyone who has lost a mother. Jump at the Sun is a feast.

  • A must-have

It's funny to read the music industry has compared Kate with Loreena McKennit. I didn't know this but they happen to be my two favourite artists. Of course, their styles are different and unique (fortunately, since this way we can enjoy the peculiarities of two different kinds of genius), but they can be compared in terms of quality, elegance in composition and masterfulness in instrumental arrangements. I think they can be compared too in the sense that if you like one of them, you will most probably like the other one, and this is a huge compliment for both of them. "Deep Hearts Core" is one of my favourite albums and I own it since it was released, together with "The Time Between"; I particularly enjoy "Place of Spirit" and "Rio del Corazón", but the whole CD is wonderful and, in my opinion, a must-have. Kate is a virtuoso of the hammer dulcimer and her fellow musicians are simply superb too. Her voice is sweet and enchanting, as you can hear in the excerpts provided in this site, and the music arrangements are simply wonderful. "The time between" is also a masterpiece and I have just ordered "Isle of Dreaming" which, to my despair, I couldn't find for years and was so happy to find in this website. I will write a review about it once I receive it, but I am sure it will take its place in the deep hearts core of my music collection together with "The Time between", "Deep Hearts Core" and Loreena's discography.

  • Simply enchanting!

A most intriguing work. The music isn't overwhelming in that all the musical instruments are clearly distinguishable and don't mask each other. This is a credit to the recording technicians as much as the musicians/songwriter. Kate has an absolutely enchanting voice which I would prefer to hear more of. The instrumentals are quite nice, but Kate's voice is the most captivating instrument. Lyrics are clear and easily understood without referring to the liner notes, which just adds to the joy of listening. You can sign me up for a standing order for her future endeavors.
