notes

"... With a vocal range as awesome as her repertoire, Kate Percival is a cabaret singer in the true European tradition ..."

From gutter to glitter - from Weimar to La La - from despair to joy - Kate Percival creates a roller-coaster world ...

Come and be seduced by the passion of Piaf, the beauty of Poulenc, the revolution of Eisler, the raunch of Kander, the sensation of Weill, the drama of Bernstein, the intensity of Berg and the wit of Sondheim

Kate has performed at the Edinburgh Festival, the Covent Garden Festival, Brandy's in New York, the Soho Festival, the King's Head, the Riverside Studios, the Barbican, Claridges, in literally dozens of pubs and restaurants, and most sensationally on the floor of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange for Nelson Mandela.

KATE has devised and performed two one-woman shows:
REBEL IN MUSIC, based on the life and music of the Austrian composer HANNS EISLER, which toured Britain winning her great acclaim.
FROM BERLIN & PARIS TO BROADWAY, a cabaret revue performed all round London including King's Head Theatre, & The Young Vic Studio.

A founder member of the glamorous cabaret group, The Queens of The Night, with Issy van Randwyck and Denise Wharmby. They recorded the signature tune for Brighton Belles, a TV sit-com.

Years of work in theatre, film and television; She created the role of the Opera Singer in the RSC production of A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess, with music by Bono, The Edge (U2) and Beethoven.
She has co-written feature films: Homeland; Crocodile Rose, which is in pre-production: TV, a comedy/drama pilot for the BBC, Garage FM: Blood And Dust, an international mini-series (RAI, ANT 2, ZDF) shot in France and Morocco: and is developing a scientific based detective series, Electric Butterfly.

Some Press comments:-

" In one of the prettiest venues in London, the Bush Hall on Uxbridge Road, singer Kate Percival gives an all-too-rare cabaret performance. With her accompanist, handsome Mike (no relation) Haslam, this girl sings like a bird. What better than two in the Bush?"
Nicky Haslam, 'The Beautiful People,' Hello -26/3/02

"... on stage she radiates a commanding and dangerous presence and sings with a power that could, one feels, rouse her listeners to the barricades ...."
Rupert Christiansen, Harpers & Queen

"... twenty five years after Lotte Lenya took us on her celebrated journey from Berlin to Broadway, Kate Percival invites us to return ... her achievement is all the greater in that while Lenya stuck to the standards of her husband Kurt Weill, she also includes Jacques Brel, Monnot, Kander & Ebb, and most triumphantly of all, Brecht's second great collaborator Hanns Eisler. With a vocal range as awesome as her repertoire, Percival is a cabaret singer in the true European tradition. Her peers are Helene Delavault and Milva, and she challenges not only Lenya but the Eartha Kitt of 'Monotonous' and the Edith Piaf of 'La Vie En Rose'. She crowns her performance by taking on both parts of the classic Bernstein duet 'A Boy Like That' ... and winning."
Michael Arditti, The Standard

" ... brilliantly exemplified by Kate Percival's powerful, stylish performance of the songs, her mastery of their many moods and minor modes ..."
TLS

" ... Percival is a powerful performer who also considers her audience's listening pleasure by giving potted translations of the songs in French and German before letting rip. She creates a warm, even sensual atmosphere... "
The Independent

`' ... her range is impressive ... it's the voice that counts and hers is powerful, varied and sinewy ...

  • Mystery and Mastery: 15 Songs about pain of life and love.
    author: Britt Harrison

Ms Percival weaves through her extraordinary selection of European and America songs, like a vocal Pied Piper. Her enthralling voice finds common themes of pain and passion linking Poulenc to Eisler, and Brel to Berg. Story meets musicality and delivers real emotion, in this fabulous album that defies classification.

  • Exquisite voice. Tremendous range. A true singing actress.
    author: Claudia Beechman

A wonderful collection of songs. Ms. Percival possesses an exquisite voice of unusual timbre, range and expression. Her intonation is perfect and her high notes bring chills to the spine, especially on Poulenc and Anouilh's Les chemins de l'amour. Her German and French are flawless. Inspiring.
