notes

"Only Natural" is the third album to be released by Karnalis, who specializes in a more unorthodox approach to the Native American flute. Whether played solo or teamed with other instruments, with a traditional sound or a more worldly repertoire, the flutes of Karnalis create a mosaic of original music that won’t soon be forgotten. "Only Natural" is a journey that will take listeners across a vast and diverse musical landscape, incorporating the enchanting sound of the Native American flute into a myriad of genres, tempos, and feelings. This is a musical story, telling of one man's search for inspiration from the wildness within.

Karnalis began playing the Native American flute in 2005, taking years of prior musical experience and applying them to an exploration of just what the simple wooden instruments are capable of. He enjoys playing his flutes in all different genres, but also has a great appreciation and love for the traditional style of playing which makes the mesmerizing sound of the Native American flute so widely recognized. For "Only Natural," Karnalis has taken his flute playing to a grander arena, throwing in some wild, improvised instrumentation. Along with the incredible hang drum talent of Philadelphia percussionist Dante Bucci on a version of Dante's song, "Reminiscence," the original compositions of Karnalis and his flutes will take your ears on a wild journey indeed!

Karnalis himself provides the following: all Native American flutes, vocals, and percussion (except on "Reminiscence"), guitar, "didgeritube," conch shell, bullroarer, antelope horn flute, shakuhachi, trumpet, and bagpipe chanter.

Karnalis uses flutes made by Geoffrey Ellis, Larry Evans, Dennis Frederiksen, Butch Hall, Scott Kennedy, Dale Robertson, Spring Shine, and even one made by himself!

"Reminiscence" features the hang drum of Dante Bucci, recorded at Ndugu Studios in Philadelphia, PA, and provided courtesy of Ufo Tunes (ASCAP). The original song concept of "Reminiscence" belongs to Dante Bucci.

"Sleep Well, My Darling" features lyrics written by Megan Duke, used with permission.

Finally, that wonderful artwork was painted and provided by Kayti "Kyohti" Veen.

  • A musical treat for all tastes!

I've been a fan of Karnalis since his first CD, and this one is clearly his best. There are so many different styles and just in hearing the music you can tell he enjoys creating it. I can't decide which song is my favorite because they're all great! Zen Midnight has a great jazzy beat and flavor to it. Dust and Shadow has a wonderfully mysterious sound, plus he's added great effects to that one. Walkabout is good fun with the Didgeritube - his answer to not owning a didgeridoo. Coyote Memories is an intricate piece of beauty. All the songs are wonderful! If I could give the CD more stars I would!
