notes

The original music of Karen Gross blends rock, pop, and folk while highlighting Karen's expressive voice, eloquent lyrics, and lingering melodies. Accompanying herself on piano and keyboard, Karen performs solo and in collaboration with guitarists, percussionists, cellists and violinists. She is known for a warm, engaging stage presence that reflects her love of sharing music with people of all ages and musical tastes.

Karen's CD "Navigating," self-released in June 2003, captures her versatility as a writer, performer and producer. Songs range from the piano ballad "Late for Love" to the violin-inflected "Coffee Date for Two" to the guitar-driven "Someone So Good"-- even an electronic-pop version of her song "Little Princess."

Karen performs regularly at live music establishments, coffeehouses, theaters, and arts festivals. She also performs for student and community audiences at schools, libraries, and benefit events, and was selected as a New Edge Artist for the 2002-2003 season at the Community Education Center of Philadelphia.

Karen began piano lessons in the fifth grade and soon learned to sing and play popular, folk, and classic rock songs. She found music to be a means of personal and creative expression and drew inspiration from artists such as Joni Mitchell and Neil Young. She began writing and performing her own songs at age 14.

Now a journalist as well as a performing songwriter, Karen articulates experiences and emotions with a refreshing honesty that catches people by surprise.

  • Karen Gross is Amazing
    author: Emily Barth Isler

Navagating is an incredible album, hopefully the first of many from the amazingly talented Karen Gross. She is following in the footsteps of great female folk singers everywhere, yet also charting her own path in the genre. Her lyrics are insightful, her music inspiring. I wish I lived closer to Philadelphia so that I could hear her play live. Come do a concert in New York City, Karen! You have tons of fans here.

  • Soothing & comforting...
author: Cassendre Xavier, Musician & Writer

Hi, Karen! Someday we'll meet... We both know David Wannop and you once gave my writing a favorable review (you said I "redeemed" When Falls the Coliseum: A Journal of American Culture (Or Lack Thereof)". I was just designing some stationery and included your quote that I had "clever and snappy essays"... Karen Gross of Phila City Paper, then I thought, lemme google her, and I found your website and saw that you were on CD Baby, too! Congratulations on your CD...it sounds really wonderful! I hope to see you in concert sometime... I saw that many of your dates are not in Philly... I don't drive, so I'll look out for you at one of DW's Eastern Keyboard gigs. Take care and congrats again!
