notes

Richard Kapp, born 1976, is a singer/songwriter living in the city of Vienna, Austria. From an early age he has been involved in the creation of music, first came the piano, then came the drums. A prolific musician in his native city he has been involved in many different musical projects as a keyboardist, drummer and composer.

All the while he has been honing and refining his songwriting skills. Richard Kapp uses his anarchic pop sensibilities to craft unusual and quirky indie pop tunes. Another brand are his clever, witty and sardonic lyrics with a wink. But it is his undying love of melody and surprising harmonies that makes the aural senses tingle. He constantly attracts other musicians because of his tight arrangements and ear for a damn fine song. A songwriter gathering momentum he has worked with highly respected indie-musicians like Back Bone Shiver, Peter Kearns, Gis Johannsson and Woodstock Taylor for his debut album "A Tie For Free".

Richard's songs have been featured on several compilations like "Planet Of Sound Vol. I", the benefit CD "Hope Never Dies", "Band:Union IV" and "Band:Union V". His music has been compared to Scott Walker, Rufus Wainwright, Burt Bacharach, The Divine Comedy, Lou Reed, 10cc, ELO, Zappa, The Beatles and even Iggy Pop. All those different styles, influences, his mixture of electronic and acoustic elements made him gaining a lot of recognition on the indie scene for his unique connection to music. Meanwhile, Richard has been played on several radio stations including the scottish station Radio Six.

The debut album "A Tie For Free" surprises constantly with all kind of moods and different vibes. Or as Gordon Bell, reviewer at Ripping Tracks and producer of Gustav Bertha put it: "It's high art and music hall, pop and sarcasm. How does he pack so much stuff into a track without losing it? We've no idea, but it's quite simply brilliant. What fun!"

  • Charming and Playful...
    author: Steve Ison

Love this album!..Richard occupies some strange exotic land between the witty whimsicality of The Divine Comedy, the sophisticated musical playfulness of Van Dyke Parkes or early 10cc and the campness of Noel Coward. Its rare to find a keyboard/synth based album that is so warm and human in vibe and spirit, but Richard genuinelly pulls it off...This is a CD brimming with musical and lyrical inventivness, quirks and unexpected delightful twists and turns.Personal highlights for me are the wonderfully charming Divine Comedyesque A Tie For Free..Goodbye Society with its brilliant musical change in the chorus-and the utterly sublime worldwide-hit-that-should-be Light In My Room..Lovely..
