notes
When I was working on artwork I would often take a break to play the harmonica. These are the songs I loved to play the most. Sometimes the artwork would give me musical ideas, and other times , in the middle of a song, I'd see a color for a painting. After a while, I realized these songs might fade away. And so I recorded them while they were still fresh. Here they are.

it's bout the Big M
author: Ethan YoungI hear stories in the music, and that's the way I want it to be. Dan Kaplan has amazing chops -- sometimes it can sound like there is more than one instrument and/or musician at work. But the flashes of technical brilliance are rare, and appropriate. He seems as comfortable with the use of space as much as he is more than able to fill it when necessary. What this all means is that the music, in my humble opinion, is a form of narrative communication. Technical flourish is not an end to itself, but a means to a greater end. And I think Dan gets this, and it comes across brilliantly in this CD. There are a range of tunes with a range of tempos on this CD, with enough variety to keep me interested and on my toes as a listener throughout. It gains its coherence from Mr. Kaplan's consistent insistence on communicating through music. In the end, I would have liked to see in the liner notes more info about the traditional songs, their historical context and origin. And perhaps also backstory on original compositions. Always take the opportunity to educate the willing and enthusiastic listener! :)
Who would have thought!
author: Marvin HinesSome musical instruments can succeed in solo performance while others not only succeed but offer a strong personal connection with the listener. Dan Kaplan's "Solo Harmonica" CD is this kind of music. You don't have to have roots in the "country" to be moved by Dan's music although the connection resonates stronger if you do. Thanks Dan. Keep the music coming!
Wow!

author: corinne hallwachsThis has to be one of the best solo harmonica players I've heard! This CD has various styles of songs with amazing harmonica technique; many times it sounds as though two harmonicas are being played at the same time, solo and harmony, but it is only one... unbelievable CD!! I recommend it to everyone who loves the harmonica! Thanks Dan Kaplan, I can't wait for your next CD!!
