notes
“My Time To Shine” is an album of inspired songs; each having a story behind it, all but one written by a 16-year-old girl from Rochester, NY named Nora Kaminski. Now 17, you can find Nora performing solo in Rochester’s wonderful coffeehouses and with other musicians that she has met at open mike nights.
Nora’s songs are different than you may expect for a young girl. Her songs speak of politics, social issues like racial prejudice and the injustice of war, relationships, and beauty. Listen to the control she has in her voice and the emotion she puts into her songs. These were recorded in a home studio and no effects were used.
Her song, “Mona Lisa Smile”, was inspired by a woman at the Rochester Public Market. Friends of hers met there on Saturday mornings to play for shoppers, accepting tips in an open guitar case. As she performed one song, a beautiful lady danced in front of her, waving her arms in the air while her child watched her admiringly.
Another song, “Through My Eyes”, was written after meeting a friend at an open poetry mike night at a downtown coffee shop that featured African-American poets. Her friend was obviously uncomfortable with the situation and he felt the need to leave early. The song speaks to the friend about that.
“We Are Free” was written after she had a great day with some great friends. After listening to it, you feel how good she felt. “Momma Say” and “Emo Boyfriend” are songs that talk about a mother’s advice and a fun look at “emo” kids. “Smartbombs for Freedom”, a song about the (first) gulf war, was actually a project for school that turned out so poignant that we included it on this CD.
The one cover song is “Fly”, originally by the Canadian band Moxy Fruvous. Nora is a big fan of the band’s music, especially this beautiful but tragic song.
Nora is currently a senior in High School and has attended the Hochstein School of Music since 1st grade, taking violin and voice. She recently toured Germany and the Czech Republic with the Hochstein Youth Philharmonic Orchestra. Her Dad played open mike nights at coffeehouses with her starting when she was 15. At age 16, she quickly learned how to play guitar and began writing songs. Nora started recording them during the fall of 2005 and finished up in the spring of 2006. Next year, she plans to attend the State University of New York at Fredonia.
Nora worked very hard on this CD and hopes you enjoy it.

one prob
author: hiddengood songs keep it up. very inspiring just one negative criticism... did you record your guitar plugged directly into a mixer? ugh. you shoulda used a condensor mic or something. im not a big fan of that ultra trebly twangy sound of an electric-acoustic plugged directly in.
Awesome CD
author: Stephen StrassnerNora show so much personality and versatility on this CD. She use styles from country to folk to alternative. She starts out the CD with fast funny but important song (very strong). It makes you know that for a young girl from Rochester she has something to say and you better listen. Good Work Nora!!
