notes
Canadian violist and violinist Tanya Kalmanovitch operates at the intersection of contemporary jazz, classical music and free improvisation. A formidable classical performer, she is fast building an international reputation as an innovator on the viola, bringing its rich, malleable tone into the realms of contemporary jazz.
Joined here by Calgary electric guitarist and producer Russ Broom and acoustic bassist John Hyde, Kalmanovitch's first outing as a bandleader and songwriter earned her plaudits for dreamy, melancholic, pop-tinged jazz.

Perfect with a glass of red wine after a long day.
author: Alan HallTK's blend of voice and viola gives a magic sound. Her dry but sensual style of singing with the richness of her string playing makes for an unusual jazz album but one that is highly rewarding. Well supported by guitar and bass in this intimate trio setting. Perfect after a long day with a glass of good red. I hadn't heard her music before buying this CD but I'll certainly be looking for more.
An impressive debut!
author: Bob Doull, The Calgary StraightYou can count the number of memorable jazz violinists on your fingers. Joe Venuti, Stephane Grapelli, Stuff Smith, Ray Nance, Billy Bang, Regina Carter, and Mark Feldman. Tanya Kalmanovitch makes eight. This is an impressive debut and deserves support.
