THE PROJECT:
Waiting on a Dream, the debut album from singer Kaipo Kapua, is the culmination of years of self
determination, much hard work and the power of a dream.
From the opening upbeat rhythm of “Falling For You” to the final chords of “The Only One For Me”, Waiting on
a Dream will take you on a non-stop pleasure ride filled with heartfelt island music rooted in reggae
and classic R&B styles. This is music that will lift your spirits and get you moving.
Waiting on a Dream features ten powerful original compositions inspired by Kaipo’s observations of life,
love and relationships, plus Kaipo’s stirring version of the classic doo wop tune “Since I Don’t Have You”,
originally recorded by The Skyliners.
Other highlights include the island reggae flavored tracks “You and Me” and “Trouble in the World”, the
R&B ballad “Come Back to Me” featuring the dynamic skills of local rapper Joey R, and the island tribal
flavored “Positivity”, an emotional plea for unity in these troubled times.
Producer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist Imua Garza (Opihi Pickers, Imua Garza & Kamu Sing) worked
closely with Kaipo to provide the perfect instrumentalaccompaniment for the songs and to show off Kaipo’s
smooth and soulful vocal style.
THE ARTIST:
It wasn’t unusual to hear the strains of music coming from the home where Kaipo grew up. The voices of
Auntie Genoa and other popular “cha-lang-a-lang” artists from Hawaii would often play from the living
room stereo, Kaipo’s mother and grandmother singing along to the songs they loved.
Kaipo began his own musical journey when he started playing the ukulele at five-years-old emulating those
he had heard playing on the family stereo. Strumming alone in his room Kaipo would often daydream of
someday becoming a singer and having his own record By age 9, Kaipo’s musical skills caught the eye of
judges winning him a top prize at a local ukulele competition. By middle school he added the guitar,
the bass and keyboards to his list of musical accomplishments.
In recent years, Kaipo could often be found at local clubs enjoying live music where he would often be
coaxed onstage for a special guest appearance often bringing down the house with his performance and
always leaving audiences wanting more.
In 2005, Kaipo made his first appearance on a CD release when he contributed “The Christmas Song” to
the Opihi Pickers and Friends An Old-Fashioned Christmas CD..
Kaipo has much to contribute to the world of music. Waiting on a Dream is just the start of what will
hopefully be a long and exciting musical journey.
