notes

Most think of cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Los Angeles, or New Orleans when they think of the hood. But although this may surprise most, there are hoods that reside in the state of Kentucky - one of those being in Lexington, KY, on the east end where it holds various drug activity, store and resident robberies, kidnappings, and even murders. Although the east end of Lexington has and still does produce negative and violent activity, it managed to produce some of the best talent Kentucky holds. Kevin a.k.a. Vino, or now better known as Kae State, grew up in a single parent home with consistent exposure to criminal activity. With his father in and out of prison and now currently serving a 22 year sentence, the male figure in his life was absent so he turned to what he thought was survival, a life of crime. While he was participating in various criminal activity, including robberies and drug trafficking, Kae State was always intelligent, thus given the name Vino (referring to wine, improving with age). At just 8 years old, he began putting his intelligence to use when he started writing lyrics. Then at age 12, he began to take his lyricism seriously, as well as finding his other talent, the art of beat making. While in and out of juvenile, and then starting his adult criminal record at the age of 19, Kae State was still consistently writing and producing. After being released on probation in 2006 after being convicted on felony drug charges, Scoupe (one-third of NHB), was the only hand that reached out to him while he was returning to a path of destruction. Once connected with Scoupe, Kae State reclaimed his writing and production talent and turned it into a professional career. Now instead of turning to a life of crime, he turned to his lyrics. Kae State incorporated the reality of his life into his lyrics, and along with his original metaphors, and no holds barred attitude, what he produced is undeniably unique and much needed in the industry today. Following in the footsteps of his inspirations, Scarface, B.G., Outkast, and Lil’ Wayne, Kae State has proven himself to be amongst the elite rappers who are proclaimed to be real. Since released from custody, and joining NHB in 2006, Kae State is a true voice to be heard and force to be reckoned with.

Over two years in the making, Kae State's debut offering A Day In The Life hits the stores as one of the few full albums to be released locally this year in the age of the mixtape . The time, work, and dedication put into this album is apparent, as State lyrically introduces himself in the opening track, "Gone," a strong, emotion-filled self-reflection. After that, he takes you through a day in the life song by song, starting with the self-explanatory "Gettin' Money '07" to let you know why he's "Sittin' Lo" in the next track, all the way through to the haunting "My Testimony," looking back on the struggles and looking forward to a better life. According to Kae State, two music videos are currently being planned, for the flashy "Stuntin' WIth The Prima" and the strong single "Tha Rocc." When you make it to the end of A Day In The Life, you'll understand why Kae State tells you "Respect My Mind" in the closing track, and judging by the quality of this album, that respect should soon be coming in from every angle.
