Over the past ten years, John Voorhees has traveled between Louisiana and Vermont playing in coffeehouses and music festivals. He has released several full-length CDs of original music, his songs have been included in three CD compilations and he once opened a show for Livingston Taylor. Burlington, VT's "Seven Days" arts magazine describes John as "a self-deprecating wordsmith who knows a thing or two about melody... A modern folk popster who seems in love with the world and doesn't need to make himself the center of it."
Listeners have compared his performance style to John Denver, Don McLean, Billy Joel, Phil Ochs and James Taylor (but he wishes he sounded more like Ray Charles).

Frickin' Awesome!

In a word...amazing!
author: Kris WillmsThis is, by far, my favorite John Voorhees album. "April Snow", "Here for Now", and "Thrown" will pull at your heartstrings, and haunt you long after the last note has played. "Undercover Maggie" is a entertaining cautionary tale, with a beat. Even the song about the cat,("Things to Love"), is great. Wonderful album from start to finish.
Good slice-of-life folk from a great musician
author: Injun JoeAsking For Trouble is a pleasant collection of soulful serenades by a talented musician. Though the album drags during prolonged acoustic noodlings like April Snow and Here For Now it really picks up whenever he delivers the personal revelations and the pop. The album's highlights encompass the vibrant and hooky songs Present Tense and Undercover Maggie to melodic, haunted tracks like Hallucination, Unraveled and Ode to Gideon to the delightfully aggressive and quirky Like He's Drowning. John never goes wrong when he infuses folk with his pop-sensibility, and Asking For Trouble has enough of those moments to merit repeated listening.

author: litlfrogSome fine stuff here! The CD is all songcraft--its bare-bones production, good singing, and strumming guitar are there to highlight a great sense of melody and insightful lyrics. "Beginning of the End" and "April Snow" are particularly strong.

author: Chris RuggiaVoorhees' songwriting is in top form on this disk. Each song has a nice melodic turn or two, and the lyrics reflect a sensitive and intelligent worldview. The only drawback is that the presence, vitality and energy of Voorhees' live perfomances don't quite carry over 100% - but then, whose does?
