notes
Julia Brown calls herself a singer-songwriter. But her debut album is anything but your typical singer-songwriter fare.
This first recording by the Richmond, Virginia native is a surprising blend of hooky pop, driving rock, smart lyric and eclectic arrangements. All the songs are washed in Julia's powerful vocal stylings. She can roar and whisper instantly and easily - and often within the same song!
The album's 10 tracks were all written by Brown, and produced by Christian Cassan - the producer behind 1999's Minster Hill debut. The record was mastered by Eddy Schreyer, who has worked with artists such as Michael Penn, Jon Brion, and Fiona Apple.
Julia grew up on a variety of musical genres; her own musical tastes run the gamut. She's an avid fan of Britpop's best (Elvis Costello, David Bowie, XTC), old soul favorites (Luther Vandross, Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin) and classic songwriters (Michael Penn, Neil Finn, Ani DiFranco).
Julia brought all her influences to bear on her first album, adding a talent and ability that is hers alone.

It's a pity that there are no song samples of "We Can Have It All", "This Is Your Day" or "Miles From My Home" on this site. Those are just great songs and each of them is worth buying the whole CD. Julia is an incredible writer and a fantastic singer. Her melodies are very creative and catchy. I love the CD, it really is a keeper!

caught up in the haze
author: amcI fought against this cd and it won me over. Bought it thinking I would only like one or two songs, which is what happened. But with each listen, the songs get catchier, the lyrics get more meaningful and suddenly you're waiting until your next listen. It's strong and subtle, edgy yet familiar. Not your typical my-first-cd fare.
Brand New Obsession

Musical Montages!
author: Laura T. Lynch of Kweevak.comJulia's music is an eclectic mix of rock, pop, urban and progressive complete with power-packed vocals. Brown was heavily influenced by the 80's British scene. Julia writes honest passionate lyrics that are sometimes angry but are filled with strength clarity and good grooves. Brown has a wide vocal range and sings with passion and might. She is supported by skilled musicians who provide great guitars, powerful percussion and clever keys. This ten-track collection is filled with well-written, expertly produced songs that each has synergy but a unique vibe. 'Afterglow' has a funky beat, grinding guitars, versatile vocals and energizing hook lines. This song just grabs you and keeps on glowing long after the closing lines. It is followed by 'Invisible' a passionate, soulful lament of losing someone when they are most needed. The band provides just the right subtle tones and textures to convey loneliness and sadness. 'Coffee In Your Teacup' is another prime example of Julia's writing skills combined with balanced arrangements and beautiful melodies. Jubilant Newborn Alien Haze is a celebration of intelligent lyrics, intense vocals and prime musicianship from rising star Julia Brown!
Genuinely Inspired
author: Jose ChabrielI first met Julia at Santiago Douglas's birthday July 4th 2000. We initially complimented each other's space later understanding that the reason for her peaceful aura is founded on the fact that she is a humble and simple soul. Her music would not declare this ofcourse, but why would we want the music to. The lyrics depict such passion that one could see Julia writing while she's consumed by the relative(song) emotions manifesting her ideas word by word. Also, Julia's interpretation is magnificently unique. As a singer/songwriter, I myself have to take my hat off to a new rising artist and star. Love you baby. Hope to work with you in the near future. Peace!!!!
The most amazing thing I've heard in a long time!
author: Carla HallJulia, do you know how f***ing good this CD is?? I hope you do because the songs and the lush sounds won me over in the first listen. "Instinct #1" and "Afterglow" are getting lots of love from me, and this CD as a whole is just so fresh. Your lyric writing is insightful, and add to that the breathtaking production and you get a wonderful piece of work. LOVE IT!! Carla Hall www.carlahall.com
Julia Brown has TALENT.
author: Bronwen (greenpants@hotmail.com)Julia Brown, who has managed to put together a very unique and entertaining group of songs, sings with power and clarity, and writes music that people can relate to. "Afterglow," with a great counter-melody in the bass line, will get your hips swayin'; "Miles from My Home" sports driving piano work and is catchy as hell; "Eternity," with its absolutely heart-rending chorus, will remind you of every boyfriend or girlfriend you've lost; and "We Can Have it All," the album's great anthem, is attitude, attitude, attitude, with a cocky, percussive swagger and fantastic musical arrangment. BUY THIS CD, and you won't be able to stop yourself from singing along. Julia Brown has TALENT.
Your CD player says 'I do".
author: BmkThe grand vocals, insightful lyrics and overall production of this record will join this CD and your player in holy matrimony. The only threat would be Julia's forthcoming CD.

author: The Guy With The Fabulous EarsI hear many influences in Julia's work (long live British pop), but she takes them all and makes her music unique and her own. Great composer, compeling lyricist and an intriguing voice that embraces you from the first note to the last. Buy it! If you don't like it, I'll refund you!!!
