notes

Ring in the holiday season with “The Gift of Christmas,” Juice Newton’s sparkling new Christmas CD. After several years of Juice wanting to put together holiday favorites and introduce some new seasonal treasures, she is thrilled to have a musical treat for her fans.

While looking over Christmas collections, do you ever stop and say, “I love the favorites, but how about some new holiday music? Well, Juice heard you and has picked a few time honored classics such as “Go Tell it on the Mountain” and "The First Noel," but wrote some of her own along with long-time musical partner Otha Young, and keyboardist, Andre Mayeaux. You’ll honor the Christmas spirit with the new “Christmas Wish,” and celebrate the holiday festivities with the rollicking “Shining Star,” and “Santa Can Dance.”

The “Gift of Christmas” is a present for you to unwrap and enjoy over and over.

While most Christmas albums are simply 10 carols grouped on a CD Juice manages to create a cohesive album that happens to have a Christmas theme. There are a wide variety of styles on this cd ranging from country to pop to even a little vanilla rap! Her singing is crystal clear and the musicianship is creative and energetic. Leave it to Juice to put her own eclectic stamp on the season. I'm a longtime fan and this CD is just one more in a long history of unique, superior music. :)

Juice has been a great favourite of mine for 25 years, and I was eager to listen to her new recordings. I must say that I'm not a big Christmas music fan, but I really love "The Gift Of Christmas" and it's the best Xmas CD I ever got. I love the old tunes but it's so exciting to her brand new Xmas songs! I love Juice and I love this CD!

I bought this CD in September right after Juice's concert in Caruthersville, MO and she autographed it for me. She told me that she had just received her Christmas CD's that day so I was one of the first to buy it. I listened to it on the way home and over and over since then. It will probably become one of my all time Christmas favorites. I liked the song Christmas Wish so much I learned it and performed it at church. I began listening to her in 1978 and she is still one of my favorites!

I didn't quite no what to expect when I ordered Juice Newton's new Christmas album. But I took the plunge, and after hearing it a few times, I was won over by Juice's amazing grasp of Christmas music. It's like she was born to sing the songs on this sensational holiday album! In my opinion, Juice's singing is even better now than it was during her '80s heyday, and this CD exudes gratitude, love and joy. Juice's voice is amazingly versatile and expressive throughout the entire CD, and Otha Young provides wonderful background vocals. My favorite track is probably "Mary's Boy Child"; while this has never been my favorite Christmas carol, Juice puts a country-rock edge to the song that somehow makes it very moving. But in all honesty, all the recordings on this CD are great. I was quite terrified when I heard Juice rapped on this CD ("Shining Star"), but it really works for the song. I really cannot recommend this CD enough. Juice mixes old favorites with a surprising amount of original material, and the CD is a Christmastime winner all the way through. Whether she's singing traditional Christmas songs, new rockers, or folky ballads, Juice is a worldclass singer, and this CD really captures Juice at her best. (My only complaint is there are no songwriting credits anywhere; I'd really have liked to know who wrote the newer songs.)

I really didn't know what to expect when I ordered this CD. I have been a longtime Juice fan, and knew I HAD TO HAVE IT, but I wasn't sure what the production quality would be! I was pleasantly surprised that this CDs production quality is as good as those of the major labels! Juice sounds incredible, of course, and adds her own special touch to old and new songs. I like the packaging, but was surprised it didn't give more of the credits behind this CD. An excellent CD to add to my CD collection!

  • "Warmly polished"
    author: Carol Swanson

On The Gift of Christmas, Juice delivers progressive country with a rockin' edge, and it's a kick. The album opens very well with a cappella bars of Go Tell It on the Mountain, and the exciting ride begins. This music is upbeat and joyously executed. I had honestly forgotten just how good Newton's powerfully textured voice is. Her album mixes holiday favorites with Newton's own creations (written with Otha Young and Andre Mayeaux). As for the familiar tracks, Newton delivers an especially dynamic Mary's Boy Child, a splendid gospel version of Auld Lang Syne, and vibrant multi-part harmonies on Jingle Bell Rock. In the newly-penned category, I especially enjoyed the boogie-woogie Santa Can Dance. Her Shining Star is a funkified rap version of the nativity story, and while that sounds questionable, it actually works better than you might imagine. The album contains other nice surprises, too; for example, she does a nifty, hand-clappin' Better Get Ready!. I'm juiced up for The Gift of Christmas this holiday season. Juice Newton has packaged a warmly polished offering that should have crossover appeal for both contemporary country and pop audiences.
