notes
I wrote most of these songs over a period of a year or two. While the songs evolved from my personal experiences with specific people and events, my hope is that you will be able to relate to the stories. Some were easier to write then others. Even now, some are easier to play than others.
"The Ocean Song" was written after spending a season as first mate on a small commercial boat out of Ocean City, MD, fishing for sea bass and lobster. "Watchtowers" describes the towers we saw everytime time we drove down to the beach. The towers were built during World War II to gaurd the coast against air and submarine attacks. To us, they just meant the waves and sun and the beach. Our childhood. "Close Your Eyes" was written for a friend of mine who was taken from this world much too early. And so, those are examples of how I write my songs. I hope you find something in them of which you can relate.

Elegantly written and composed
author: Melissa CoxYou listen to dozens, maybe even hundreds of CDs, right? Some you listen to for just a few songs, while others you can listen to straight through, over and over again, because every song is excellent, contrasting, and fresh. 'Winds of Time' is one of those flowing, great CDs which keeps you on your toes. With every song, John brings something new to the ears, lyrically and musically. John's guitar playing is impeccable (this includes during live performances), he has a great, familiar quality to his voice, and his songs are great. My personal favorite lyric is the chit-chatty 'It's late fall/No, scratch that, it's early winter.' That line reminds me that not everything is cut and dry in life. Great music. Keep up the great writing, John!
Got to have you on my show.
author: Garrison KeillorJack Ward told me that you wanted to be on my show, but you really weren't familiar with it. Let me know after you have listened to a couple of episodes, and I will talk with you. Your sister should listen, too.
